i have an AOD that will only shift between first and second and the other gears it would shift into. is this from a lack of fluid or it the transmission dead??
Check your fluid level first, it is the easiest thing to do. Next check that the throttle valve linkage is connected then adjust it to be sure you are getting the correct pressure. Too much or too little will destroy your transmission in no time at all.
I need new glasses too! I completely missed the "E" in that AODE. That means it could be the TPS, wiring, speed sensor or the EEC itself. Is it throwing codes? When you put it in "drive" it starts in low - goes to second and then stays in second? If it won't shift to third or OD you might have a bad direct clutch.
yeah mine wouldn't go into 3 or OD...but i just unhooked the battery for 30 minutes(i heard that's how you reset the codes) and it fixed it its been 1,500 miles and it running normal.
i filled the trans up, and i belive i have the tv cable adjusted in a ball park range because i cant get the guage or anything so if someone knows how to do it by hand that would behelpfull. its stuck in second and wont shiftout i have reverse and first no problem. i talked to a tranny guy and he said it should shift through the gears without the cable but really fast.
Be warned it could smoke that thing in a hurry if you dissconnect the cable. How does the fluid look?
The AOD should shift from 2nd to third after forty-five mph and befor fifty-five with the cable adjusted properly. There are several methods to adjust the cable without a gauge. If you can't find it in your book then contact me off line (email) and I can give you one way.
If the direct clutch is burned up you won't get third or fourth gear. If it only happened once in a while it might be fixable but if it always works this way then the direct clutch is gone. Time for a rebuild and the proper setting on the TV cable (if so equipped).
How goes the battle? Did you adjust the TV cable? Have you decided to pull it out or take it to a shop? What ever you do, after you get it back in be sure to install a big cooler. It will help the tranny last a lot longer than it would otherwise.
