My friend sent this picture to me of one of our local Mavericks. The picture was taken at the Winlsow Arizona airport around 1972. As I recall the car was the first if not one of the first Mavericks in the Phoenix area. The car was from Canyon Ford and was raced by anyone who wanted to take it to the races. Originally a 6 cylinder car (of course) it was converted to a 302 4 speed in 71 or thereabouts (4 lug 8 inch too). Not sure who really owned it as it was kind of a house car. Jerry Luther was a salesman and the primary driver. Larry Yow and Joel Cheatwood raced it a lot (I even made a pass or two in it). The car was an AHRA record holder at one time but I can't remember if it was with the 6 or 302. If you put a lot of weight in the trunk and launched with the 302 on the floor it would pull the wheels about 1 inch off the ground but the ET suffered with the extra 200 pounds. We used to abuse the poor car a lot... and had a ton of fun. Alcohol may have been involved. Kelly
