Hello, I have a 71 200ci column-shift automatic maverick and was wondering what it would entail to change out the autotrans for a stock 3 speed column-shift manual trans. I am mechanically inclined and would be up to the challenge. I have access to a 72 maverick with the trans and engine and could get them for cheap, I know I would need the flywheel, but what else engine-wise would I need? Could I use the same steering column, or do I have to replace it as a unit?
You have to use the three speed column in order to get all the parts that are in there to work the shift levers. You will need the pedals and bracket assembly. You are going to need the bell housing, clutch linkage and mounting hardware. Before you make the swap be sure that the transmission is the full synchro 303 Ford box. The original Ford three speed only had synchros in second and third - I am not sure if those were ever used in the Maverick or not but it could have been swapped before so check it out. They are a very weak transmission and not worth using in a Maverick (with ANY engine).
I recommend you fix those front shocks first (http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=66505 ) before you tackle this type of modification.
Definitely, This conversion is going to be later on, Althought on that subject, I may just bite the bullet and replace the shocks.
Adding to the subject. I have a 70 200c.i maverick I'm about to start rebuilding. I want to get rid of the 200 ci with c4 auto tranny and go with a 302 with a t-5 tranny. leaving out the motor part. What do I need to do with the c-4 auto to t-5 manual conversion? Thanks in advance
Flywheel, pilot bearing, clutch cover (pressure plate), clutch plate, bellhousing, possibly an adapter (not if you get a trans from a 5.0), the T5 (V8 version), crossmember, and possibly shorten your driveline or a shorter driveline (depends on the length of the T5), clutch linkage.
