I am trying to replace the clear plastic shift indicator on my automatic floor shifter on my 1972 Maverick. It is held in place by 2 small bolts. A 5/32" wrench is too small and a 3/16" wrench is too large. I figure I need a 11/64" wrench but just want to make sure it is the right size before I order one and find out where anyone has found a wrench that size.

When I changed mine, I just randomly went through my small ignition wrench set until I found one that fit. Sorry but I did not pay attention to the size it was. The set I have, has all kinds of odd sizes and have an open and closed end and are secured on a large key ring. Mine were Craftsman brand I have had for 30 years. Maybe Sears or someone else still makes them. Sorry it's not much help.

The smallest adjustable wrench is too big, a socket won't even work because the bolt head is too close to the bracket it is holding on and the shifter rod.

I ended up getting the job done with a 4.5mm wrench. I googled a 11/64" wrench and found nothing. Every ignition wrench set I looked at did not have it as part of the set and it was not offered separate. It seems like it would have been a simple job but it was one of those PITA jobs that took way more time than you would have thought.

I have a Pinto shifter in mine. It uses the same lens. I seem to remember this one being held on by a couple of those sheet metal curved fasteners that bite onto the post. You bend them a little and you can release them.

Wondering if the Mav/Mustang shifters all are like Nick's?

Because the 4.5 mm wrench worked.

I am not talking about the lens, it is the clear plastic pointer with the red stripe to show what gear you are in.

a-ha! ... my pointer was held in that way too.

That is a really odd size. I had to track one of those down to remove a giant interior panel in my Explorer ... I fully understand your pain. It was just one fastener, and it was sunk in a hole, a 4mm was too small and a 5mm was too big ... I had to walk away from it for a few minutes and calm down ... it was pure luck that I stumbled across this odd size in a cheap set of sockets that I got as a gift. Made my day .....

I think I have that "cheap" set of sockets too! The ratchet is made of tin and it has a square drive on one side and a ΒΌ" hex on the other. It's saved my butt a bunch of times! (y)
