I'm doing a crown vic disc swap and can't find the metal or paper gaskets locally. Has anyone used silicone on these?
I don't remember seeing a gasket between the axle flange and axle tube. I went and checked the parts I got from the JY and I see no indication there was a gasket. Looks like metal to metal contact to me. You could get a sheet of gasket material and make your own gasket if they suppose to be a gasket.
The factory maverick 8" uses a seal just inside the bearing. The 8.8 from the CV uses a seal outside the bearing. Neither use a flange gasket to my knowledge.
There is definitely a metal gasket on my 8", and I know it's not a 9". I messed it up and now I can't get the axle and flange back on correctly so I have to disconnect the brake line and straighten it.
There were metal gaskets on my 8" between the backing plates and tube flange. Looks like this one: http://www.cjponyparts.com/axle-backing-plate-gasket-8-9-rear-axle-1970-1973/p/55035/
Yep, my bad memory. You guys are right. I did have them before changing to discs on the rear. I'm not sure what the actual function is since there are sealed bearings on the axles and seals inboard of the bearings to keep the axle fluid in.
Never saw a need for that gasket bit wonder if it is to help reduce brake noise transfer through the car.
ive never seen the reason for those. i see them on about 50% of the 8" and 9" that i have worked on. there should be no issues with leaving them out. especially if your switching to disk brakes. what ever reason ford put them in for is definitely out the window when doing a disk brake conversion.
