I have a 70' maverick with the 8 inch rear with 4 lugs and a 77' Granada 8 inch rear with 5 lugs. I know the Granada rear width is about 1/4 inch longer on each side compared to the Maverick. My question is, can I just take the axles out of the Granada and stick them into the Maverick rear? Is there enough empty space between the spider gears where the two axles meet? Thanks Robert
no there is not. you might be able to cut the diffenence off the spline end of the axles if there is enough spline on the shafts. we do this frequently. but the 4 lug axles usually have a smaller bearing diameter. this means that the bearing end wont be the same.
4 lugs and 5 lugs use different housing ends and bearings. No swap. The entire rear will bolt right in though.
if the entire thing bolts in straight without any mods then why not use the axles off the granada along with the rear and just swap them?
Here is a nice thread about the bearing differences. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=20444&highlight=rear+bearing+size
That is what I get for posting before the coffee is ready ............ http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=20444&highlight=rear+bearing+size :Handshake
Because the housings are different enough that the internal parts won't swap. However, the mounting points and dimensions relating to the car itself will allow the entire unit to swap.
