I am getting one for nothing and I would like input as to quality and reliability. It shifts fine and there is zero play or sloppiness so I know it's not broken. Right now it's installed in a 1969 Chevelle that had a big block and a TH400 in it so I'd need to either order or make new cables for it(I think). The only reason I'm getting it is because the guy is going to 5 speed. I have read that they are very decent. Does anyone here have any experience with them? The T handle is missing but thats fine. I wanted an 8-ball anyway.
Good deal. I like the BM in mine. The things you may need is the bracket that bolts to the tranny and the shift arm for a C-4 if that's what you have. The cable should be ok.
The same cable is used. The brackets and levers are whats different. Look here: Starshifter instructions Little advice: that lever they tell you to cut off with a hacksaw is cast iron. You need a special abrasive saw blade (made to cut cast iron and fiberglass) to cut it.
Okay, instructions bookmarked. Now where do I get the levers, brackets and the other goodies for the C4 installation? I don't own "dividers". I guess I don't need them since the hump is flat.
Be cautious to where you mount it. If you get closer to the front, the cable will be in a bind where it goes through the hole in the hump. Binding cables is a major pita. Also be carefull not to get the cable by any exhaust, another issue. When you get it all right, you'll love it...
Well I got it. The blasted thing was bolted down with one 7/16, one 5/8 and one flathead machine bolt. All nice and JB Welded on the underside so they wouldn't back out. I had to use a cutoff tool to get the shifter out. I got though. It's filthy and the base needs to be trimmed to fit my hump and it doesn't have the T handle...but I got it. Free is always best. It words great and isn't sloppy. Now all I need is the C4 brackets and I'm good to go.
Watch out for the little t-handle you pull up to work the shifter. I had a B&M Starshifter and that "T" popped off. It was plastic when I had mine. I replaced it with a metal one and a very small set screw held it on. It worked great though. Used it for 8 years.
That trigger is metal on this one. Get this, the T handle is for sale at Autozone all by itself(for faking it on cheap shifters I suppose) and it costs... $25! WTF? Thats a lot of loot for a B&M logo I think. Ebay here I come.
i have a hurst handle on the shifter in my oldsmobile the shifter is one of those $40 chrome ones from autozone though lol
I saw a chromed one today that had rhinestones all over it, blingtastic but not my style. I was considering the tried and true 8 ball or skull knob but I figure it will be awkward using the ratchet and trigger doodad. Gotta be a T style handle. Those look mean. I have the instructions saved in my bookmarks and I also need some sort of cable bracket and a Ford lever for the cable to attach to. I think I can make those myself.
I know the shifter worked really well in the ratchet position. You could pretty much shift it with your finger tips. I had it in a 48 Ford PU so when it was all the way back I could just reach down and pop it up with my finger tips. Always worked great. Cable needed to be lubed every so often, but a solid shifter.
