Hi everybody! have been sitting around waiting for my evil comet to get back from the shop, at the end it didn´t run at all if you remember from my past threads, new fuelpump, new distributor, new sparkplugs, new spark cables, when they opened up the engine to drain the oil, they found around 1 liter of tar sticking to the bottom, new gaslines all the way, new vaccumlines, new oil and gas filters, new transmission oil (since it was empty too), I feel like such a jerk, I bought this car from a guy that said everything was fixed and now i realize how stupid I have been, but thanks to the info you have given me under the past months I have been able to fix up more and more myself (with a little help fron chiltons as well), what I need now is a new carb, fix up the brakes and try to figure out why my radiator is boilning... You people rule!!!! Cheers! Robert
Boiling radiator?? That doesn't sound good!! Make sure that you are running a thermostat. The radiators are so small in these cars, without the thermostat the water circulates to fast and heats up every round building heat and building heat... Also what kind of fan are you running, straight or clutch or electric??? Do you have a shroud around the fan?? These are some things that I would check out first, if its none of these, the problem maybe from the engine side. Then the problem becomes a little more troublesome and cost more to resolve.. Don't let me for get about the water pump.... Steve I need to learn how to spell with out spell check!!!
You also want to check to coolant mix and make sure it's the proper ratio for you climate. If there's too much water it would boil at a lower temperature than needed. For example if it was topped off with straight water instead of a 50% mix.
A good cooling system flush may be in order as well. You may have a plugged up radiator among other things that have been pointed out in this post.Dont rule out a bad head gasket Either.(sorry know you didnt want to hear that)Sounds like your getting a good handle on the evil beast though.Way to go!! and keep us posted.
No shroud, not even sure what it is..? it´s a straight original fan with the belt, the radiator is not the original one, it says something in german on it, so I´m starting to wonder maybe I need a new one, because of the autotrans oil gets cooled there as well?, gonna unscrew the thermostat tomorrow and see if it works at all... Thanks!!!! Robert
You gonna start laughing now or cry, but coolant mix?, I´ve only got water in it, but the weather is not that cold yet here... What and how much to use? Thanks!!!! Robert.
The shroud is a piece of ductwork attached to the engine side of the radiator. They usually have a round hole on the engine side that the fan fits into slightly.Shrouds help direct incoming air through the radiator and the fan helps to pull air through at low speeds/idle.
I´ll try draining the radiator (head gasket means I´m out of money for years to come)... Thank you for your support!!!! Robert
Ideally you want a 50/50 mix of water/anti freeze.Drain your radiator, replace your thermostat, flush your cooling system with a good cooling system flush. Then put fresh coolant mix in system and see what happens.Good luck.
I run a 50/50 mix on water and antifreeze, but if it gets real cold there, I would go 80% antifreeze and 20% water.. Also dont give up yet, it could still be the thermostat if you have not checked it yet... Do you loose any water or does it just boil???
For my car, the fan shroud was the key to keeping it cool. I tried electric fans, clutch fans, and all the rest. But, till I put a shroud on it, it would heat up. Now, it stays very cool with the stock 7 blade fan and shroud.
Mine would never run cool until I got an aluminum radiator. I can now drive all conditions in 90-95 degree Texas heat without going over 180...Expensive fix, but it worked.
