i was trying to start my car the other day and it keep backfiring during startup and wouldnt start. i dont want to call a mechanic over to fix this. i have a 351w ive checked the firing order, 1 of my questions is do you go clockwise in putting the wiring on the distributor or counterclockwise? my distributor is a mallory comp9000 without vacumm, hyfire box a promaster coil dont knwo if that helps.
Not sure if posted before,,, Is this the first time you tried to start with new distributor? If so, recheck timing on install. I've installed tons of them and I still recheck at least 3 times,,,, still get it off at times! Check all your wiring, counterclockwise distributor goes. If all has been running before, timing chain may be the culprit. Good Luck n lets us know
Timing problem / wrong firing order, produces backfiring as described. Here is a fun fact. If you want to know which way a distributor is rotating - think of it as a pinball machine and the vacuum advance is the plunger to launch the ball. Picture the plunger being pulled back and released to launch the ball and it will tell you the rotation every time!
thanks for all the info, got me going. i have my dizzy set pointing to the #1 cyl. on the combustion stroke, and the #1 terminal pointing there also, but it keeps back firing through the carb. this motor was running last summer but had a timing issue like to timing was off and wouldn't pick up RPMs when the petal was down but if you down shifted it would. so i took it apart and set it up exactly like i said and now its backfiring... the tech from summit said check the timing chain but i know that its at 0 and its brand new as of last summer.
Triple check dist. again. Line up timing mark on compression stroke. Take a compression check of all cylinders. If you still have the old point distributor, stick it back in an see how she goes. If know anyone who has cam degree kit, you can check timing chain, gears for peace of mind.
remove #1plug, remove distributor cap, remove the coil/distributor wire...have someone crank the engine, you will be looking at the rotor and hearing for air escaping from the #1 cylinder...it might take a couple of spins/trys...but as soon as you hear the air escaping while looking at the rotor, mark the position on the distributor housing...that will be your #1 and go from their...simple good luck...
