    Hi,
On my 74,it has the original ball joints... is this a do it yourself for someone with simple tools?
Are they bolted or rivited in?
Do the lowers only come pre-attached to the lower control arm?
My tires are wearing on the inside and need to do something...
Tire shop said they are worn and an aligement wont help:huh:

both upper and lower could be done with basic tools.... incl. pickle fork, floor jack, jack stands (opt)

the lower does come with the ball joint in it... you will have to replace the whole thing

the upper is held in by bolts

    scale of 1-10 its a 1 :thumbs2:

    have at it

The uppers are riveted in from the factory. Easy to grind off the heads and knock them out, then replace them with the bolts in the BJ kit....

question. what do ball joints do? I always see them discussed but never explained if they hold something up.

Think of it literally as it is named. The ball joint works like the end of your long leg bone fitting into your hip. On a car, rather than keeping the spindle rigid to the control arm, the joint allows movement of the spindle/wheel in pretty much "any direction" (it gives the assembly "flex") so that the wheel/tire can adjust to changes in the road surface as you travel, but keep everything else in the suspension level while it is doing so.

Hope that helped in some way.

    Chris

anyone have a good way to get the ball joint rivets off without a grinder? Can I drill them out without messing up the arm? I don't have a grinder.

You could probably drill them out but a grinder would be better. A handy tool to have would be a dremel. I use mine to grind, carve, cut etc...
