I just did a 302 swap and now i need the ballast resistor they have the ballast at napa auto for like $7 but i need help with wiring. My guess is that you run a wire from starter solenoid to ballast, then from ballast to positive side of coil. Is that correct?
The ballast resistor goes inline with the 12v wire going to the coil. The starter solenoid has nothing to do with it. Swapping engines doesn't require changing to a ballast resistor. You have a resistor wire under the dash from the factory doing that part of the job.
I also added a wire from my solenoid to positive side of coil to be able to get spark, without it it just cranks with no spark
Sounds to me like you will be getting 12 volts all the time all and that will kill/burn your points and condensor out... I think you have a bad solenoid or ignition switch. You may have a wrong ohm coil as well?
The coil only gets 12V during cranking (from the starter solenoid). Once the starter solenoid is disengaged, the resistor wire from the ignition switch provides a reduced voltage to the coil. If you bypassed the resistor wire, then it makes sense that you are melting points.
Look at your other thread. I posted the method for bypassing the resistor wire in it. If you need more details let me know there.
