I'm gettin ready to paint my mav and i cant decide whether i wanna use a base coat and then a clear coat or use a paint that has the shine it it already.
    whats the best to use?
and another question...is it a bad idea to use flat black primer to primer my car if im gonna paint it yellow? It seems like it would take more paint to cover up the black primer but the gray primer doesnt seem to do as good a job as the black..

    Thanx
    Rooster

I'm sure other more experienced folks will chime in ... but I would think you would want to do single stage for you first attempt at painting a car .... but single stage will never look as nice as base/clear ..

i have done other painting but not on a whole car..i painted the top of the cab and hood of my grandfathers dodge pickup and i paint the top of the cab, hood and rear spoiler of my 94 eagle talon..i know how to paint..but i havent painted a complete car..my problem w/ single stage is that no matter how many times i repaint my car and no matter how many coats i put on it still fades away in a couple weeks...i was wondering if the base/clear coat would not fade like the other does...my dad is an experienced painter and he couldnt even get it to work right...although it coulda been the paint we were using..

Single stage paint shouldn't fade for years ... must have been the paint, prep or mix. Base/Clear will not fade at all ..

I quit using single stage paints years ago. My preference is base/clear. But I see gorgeous single stage paint jobs out there.

I like the euro primers that Nason has. I would use the buff color if you intend on painting the car yellow. You can also have primers tinted to match your topcoat. Makes it nice when you get nicks and stuff.

ok i'll look into that..just so happens my local auto parts house specializes in nason paints :D. whats the best way to go about the flat black? should i paint that on first and just tape it off or have that the top coat?

If you are talking about the grabber flat black areas like the hood and tailight panel, I would paint that after the base/clear has been done. If clear over it, then you got shine.
