i am prepping my greasy engine bay for a new motor. i tried a few different brands of degrease and they worked OK with a pressure washer on my engine bay, but i want the bay to be spotless. i began looking for a solution. I found that some good old fashioned oven cleaner sprayed on and left for 10 minutes, even the hardest crustiest thickest grease and dirt came right off. this is good because the old 250 just pored oil out of the valve cover gasket. i am guessing it did for 20 years. i needed to clean up the empty engine bay before the 302 went in sooooo... i know this is an old trick but it sure works. i like working in a clean space and lets face it, a clean engine bay adds 50 horse!
yes i know my shop in a mess, i just said i like a clean place to work, i didn't say i "had" a clean place to work!
Oven cleaner is pretty nasty stuff. It contains Ethers, lye and methylene chloride. It it corrosive to skin and eyes, and, when inhaled, to internal organs. It is best to avoid the fumes and skin contact. Greased Lighting will naturalize the pH in the grease and dirt and it will hose right off. Use a old paint brush to work in the soap
dave from london hey dave, does it smell like ricecrispies? no, the car was a BC car and was bought by an Alberta enthusiast who had his wife drive it. he bought a grabber from another guy (my buddy) and used the red 75 as partial payment. i bought it off my buddy and brought it to Manitoba. p.s. i was born in Guelf and lived in grater Toronto area. i still have many family members in Ontario.
thanks Bob i am new to this maverick thing but am enjoying the build! i work with teens and they are watching me build the car on youtube. i live in farming country and lots of these teens have some mechanical know-how. it has become kind of a teen group car! lots of opinions and willing people. it is a fun build.
