I am putting a set of 15” Ansen slots on my 70 maverick. Wondering what the best tire size is? I think i usually run 235/60 on my other cars of the era, but I have always had the tiny 14” wheel/tire combo on this car. These wheels are 15x8. Pics are helpful.
What's the back-spacing of those wheels? An 8-inch rim may be too wide for the front depending on the back-spacing. When I had 15x8s on the rear of my Maverick, I ran a 235/60, but you can run up to a 255/60 (they're pretty tall though). For the front, I would run a 7-inch rim and a 215/60 or 225/60. I wouldn't go with a diameter any larger than 25-1/2 inches on the front...
On the front of my '70 I have 205/70 with 15X6, 4" backspace wheels and 255/60 on 15X8 wheels on the rear. Skinnys and fats. Both are about the same diameter so my spare fits the front or rear.
I have 235/60-15 on the front. The rim is 15 x 7 with 4 inch b/s, no problems 2 years out. I would not exceed 4.25 b/s, and that is on a 7 inch diameter rim.
A 235/60 will fit with 4.5" bs without a spacer, but on an 8" rim it pushes the bead out and the tire doesn't look as good as it does on a 7" rim. Depending on the car, a 255/60 will fit, but it will be VERY close to the spring, and I'd expect occasional rubbing. That is what Dennis has on his Comet GT, so I'm eager to see how it works for him when he starts driving the car. I have been thinking of running that size, but I feel like I will definitely need a spacer if I do, as it should use up what clearance I have to the leaf with the 235s.
I see 2 inch aluminum spacers available. So this would change the back spacing to 2 1/2 inches, so that would eliminate any issues with rubbing the suspension. Wondering how that will look on the car. If anybody has put spacers on, and has any advice, let me know.
