i have a 72' maverick with a stock 250 and id like to keep the 250 but give it more power. what is the best way to increase the power?
It's gonna take a lot of bucks to get some bang out of it.. search classicinlines.com or cliffordperformance...that'll be a start..
Nitrous would be the cheapest way to add a lot for power. Most other stuff your gonna be spending a lot of money to add on even 25hp.
you can get them up to 300 hundred horse but holy hell its expensive!i'm with comet fever,i'd throw a v-8 in it to . that being said if you want to keep the six and don't mind spending the bucks thery're pretty cool to see with horse like that coming from them.
Swap the timing gear/chain to a pre-emission ('69-'71) set. This will retard the valve timing and will add more low end torque. Swap to either a Pertronix or Duraspark II ignition. Re-curve the distributor. Get a copy of the Falcon Six Cylinder Performance Handbook
I replaced my 2.79 with a 3.00 and it made a big difference in the gitty-up-and-go without hurting gas mileage. Mater of fact, it gets better mpg in city driving and about the same on the interstate. The engine doesn't have to work too hard to get rolling or maintain speed.
all good advice my son has a I6 in his car and we were going to go and try to be different and race build a I6 comet but that was before we figured out it would cost a fortune for the car to run any kinda fast speeds compared to a v8. a HUGE hp v8 would cost you about what it would cost you to build that inline to half of the hp the aluminum head is $2k alone unless you can find them used and in good shape on the secondary market. but thats almost impossible and still expensive. to give you an idea on how expensive they are used, I sold a used head and intake manifold for over $1200 here just last year. so just have an idea of how fast you want to take that old inline. and how much you want to spend. for low budget I would say change your rearend gears add a newer distributor with the better spark set up. and maybe if they make it go gear drive for your timing chain set up. get new valves or have the head machined for bigger valves and get the 2 brl carb they sell an adapter from the old 1 brl to allow you to bolt on the two barrel classicinlines.com is the best place to look for performance questions on those motors. if you need used parts talk to rwbrooks or craig selvey
The '77-up head has bigger cc intake log and bigger intake valves. Also there's a hex intake log that is even bigger cc
thanks for all the replys guys. after reading all of your comments i think i will go with a V8 but should i go with the 289 or 302?
why would i have to cut the shock towers? to make more room for the 302? isnt there already enough room for a 302 to fit in?
People keep asking about putting a 289 in a Maverick. Since a 302 is basicly the same block are there any advantages to using a 289. 302's are easier to find and 5.0 are now cheap. Why go with an engine that hasen't been made since 1968. A 289 never came in a Maveric or Comet. Not trying to be negative just asking a question.
even headers arent all that bad you just have to put them on from under the car then they almost slide right in they just need a little convincing. the passenger side will slide RIGHT in but the drivers side is where the convincing comes in but nothing major just a good little shove spark plugs arent a big deal once youve done it once. the first time it took me like 4 hours just to change my plugs but that was with fighting the ratchet and socket and motor lifting plates that were bolted to my motor. now it can be done in about 20 minutes or so
