hey what's up,i'm looking for a good combo for a streetable 302 or 351w,my car has a 302 with stock 351w heads on it went it was sold back to me,-1974 maverick-.i had a 351c in it in the early 80's and it ran mid 12's on muslce and low 11's on nos with 430 gears and c4 trans.i was younger then with less bills-hahahaha-now money is a little short,so if anyone can help me get back to doing something that i love-please helpppppppppp-.thank you -morris-
Morris, The 302 will never replace what you had but a supercharger will make it go. Use your 302 with the 351 heads - give it a good valve job, screw-in studs and do a quick port-match and blend on the intakes and exhaust. Polish the rough spots in the chambers and unshroud the intake valve. You will need a set of LOW compression pistons that are forged and some good steel rods. The stock crank is fine up to about 7000 rpm so just polish it and balance the rotating assy. No more than 8:1 compression and less is better. Set the blower to give you 10 psi for the street and when you race it set it up to 14 or so. For a cam pick a super-charger grind on the mild side - let the supercharger do the rest. The C4 will have to be built a bit or replaced with one from Summit or B&M (it would be cheeper to have it built up If you were around here). The tranny should be able to handle 5-600 HP. you won't need roller bearings in it but it should have the lurication circuit improved and all the tricks and parts to make it stay together. a 3500 rpm stall should be fine for the track and it will be fine on the street too. 3.89 to 4.30 gears is great for the strip but if you are going to drive it on the street you will want either an after-market over-drive or 3.50 to 3.75 gears. Its not a big buck racer but it is a good competitor that will run on the street and do a good job on the track - it should run in the 11's and still make it to the family reunion without blowing pieces of car on the road between.
351w or 302 combo thanks paulS for the imformation, but what size supercharger would i need and where is the best place to look to buy one.
To go with a supercharger set-up as has been described, you had better be real good friends with your local banker or loan officer. Just reading your original post, am inclined to think this would not fit in your plans right now. Several companies can sell you blowers for all types of use, but $$$$ is always the factor in any of them. Then your cam, rods, pistons etc. are figured in, along with larger fuel pump and lot's of other goodies to make a good reliable machine. I would guess a 4:71 or similiar type newer blower would do fine, the Lightning factory set-up uses only about 6lbs of boost at full throttle and really hauls a** for a stock type street machine. Turbo's are now the rage and may be a bit more easy to install with less hood clearance problems and high dollar add ons. Good example is the older Buick Grand National's, worked real well and still drove very nice on day to day basis. My preferance would be a low budget 351W with a good matching cam/intake/carb/head and rotating assy. A good rebuilt stock type trans with shift kit (200.00 my charge) should hold up fine even with a 150 shot of NOS if you desire. Roller cam is a real plus along with good gearing and some weight saving work on the whole car. My opinion on this subject is based on many years of watching lots of people buy tons of aftermarket, high dollar add ons, and then become quite frustrated at the less than expected results. But you are the one to decide what and how much you want to spend to have a real sleeper of a car. Good luck either way and hope you have fun with the end results.
