owww...Fram is ok but I only run them when I have to. Pennzoil I havent run in a car since around 1985. I try to run Motorcraft oil and filter when I can. Valvoline and Havoline are both good oils also. I rebuilt a motor for a guy that ran pennzoil exclusively...and I have never seen such a sludged up motor!! It was terrible. I talked to some buddies of mine and they stay away from pen oil also...for the same reason. Just my opinion.

There have been horror stories about Pennzoil for years, because it used to be a parifin based oil, and if you didn't change it often, it would get pretty sludgy. I am not sure that is true anymore.

I met an engineer for Wix filters, and he told me that Fram filters were among the worst filters on the market. Best marketing, worst filters. Buy the Motorcraft ones.

The best oil produced is probably Red Line or Royal Purple but most people can not afford these!! I know I can't!!:( My opinion is that Mobil 1 is a really good oil !! As far as filters go, I would probably stay away from Fram but I use Mobil 1 filters.

I had to spend some time at SouthWest Research Lab in San Antonio on a project that needed qualifying for API service.

While I was there, I noticed they were testing motor oils. Not being in direct competition with the products, one of the engineers let me in on the fact that ALL the motor oils (not the synthetics) were about the same. This has been about five years ago but I'd imagine the results would be the same.

The only thing the engineer told me, and it makes sense, is to use one brand motor-oil and stick with it, as the different additives in each brand do not mix well with others.

Yes, Royal Purple gets my thumbs up - only becuase it is highly recommended by my racing buddies. I'm running it in my Maverick (well, I "WILL" be running it in my Maverick).

Two 1973 LDO Mavericks (one 4 Drag one 4 driving like Mad on the roads :) ) also have a 75 6cyl Stock! Ok, well sort of Stock :P
i wouldn't go with Pennzoil stuffs turns into like water after a hard run.

The Guys at Roush that built the crate in one of my cars said they only use Mobil 1 in their motors. But i'd say Redline is just as good.

In my everyday cars i just use vavoline syntech. Much cheaper then Mobil one. As for filters I use Mobil one and K&N.

I also read some thing on some reseach on oil filters some where and lots of them have drain back which is supposed to be not good. also some of the filters out there are made by the same company just branded with a differant name... if i find that link again i post it.

For my beater with 130k on it and since it leaks oil all the time i run Racing 20/50 in it... slow the leak down lol :D and just run motorcraft and fram filters.

i say just change your oil and filter every 3k and that will be fine!

My engine lives on Kendall GT1 and Kralinator filters . My engine builder reccomended these as the filters do not use cotton in them which has been known to damage bearings !
Also I have never seen an engine so clean when rebuild time comes , I now swear by it and use it in every vehicle!:)

i just use the valvoline max-life....i like the valvoline because it just looks clean when it comes outta the bottle...i know for the geo metro i use the advance auto parts brand of oil and compared to the valvoline it looked dirty.....ehhh it's just what your used to....i will try the royal purple but need the $$$$$!!!!
i normally use the motorcraft filter for the mav.... and purolator filters in other stuff. as you can see i spend money on the mav and skimp on the others...lol

    what no QS

I have (not ever owning a racing vehicle) run castrol gtx in all the four bangers I've ever owned, switched to Quaker State 30 for the Buick Regal GS and GMC 1/2 ton v-8, Chevron Delo 10w-40 for the diesel ford van-170,000 and runs like a top. the comet, stayed w/QS for the fact I think thats what the lady that owned it the past 28 yrs used. I do change oil/fltr every 3750 or so, no more than 4000.The comet is one a oil change every 2 month program for now, trying to clean it up a bit....Robert
oh filters-motorcraft for the fords-delco for the gm's

    .

As Rick said, most oils are just about identical. The only oil I'm aware of that uses a different oil base and ends up with a different oil in the end is Mobil 1 synthetic. Their oil is supposed to give more protection at higher temperatures.

As for Pennzoil gumming up engines, that's ridiculous. The reason engines get gummed up is from people not changing their oil often enough. I don't care what type of oil you use....if you don't change it often enough, your engine is going to get gummed up.

All oils are basically the same guys. If you're going to spend money on buying a synthetic, you might as well buy Mobil 1 or another brand that uses a superior base, as you're already spending extra money on motor oil anyways. Why not get the best if you're already spending the money. If you're using non-synthetic oil, it doesn't really matter what you use. I'd be willing to bet that even bargain oil like FLAG probably is the same as the name brand oils.

I use Casterol Syntec, but I'm switching to Amsoil. Caster is a blend and not a full synthetic. Amsoil and Mobil are full sythetics.

I work on the OEM side, Ran the Customer Relations department for 5 years and when I hear about a sludged up engine that has failed and the guy produces reciepts for all the oil changes, 9 out of ten times its Penzoil. Penz and Q-State are parifin base. On our V6 that is aluminum it cools very quickly, it just seems that the parafin oils sludge. I used Penz in a falcon when I was a kid and it used oil. Switched to Caster GTX and it was just fine.

I tried Mobil 1 in my Vette and will never ever use it again. At the time all they made was 0-20wt and I lost 10 lbs oil presure cold and the engine knocked. I drained it out and replaced it with Syntec. Got most of the pressure back. I run it in my streetrod now.

Went 80k miles on a Vega before the engine failed using Caster GTX.

Wicks private brands filters for a few companies and makes some of the best filters and the worst, but if you buy a $1 filter, that is what you get. I cut open a Fram and a Wicks to compare. Throw out the Fram.

Oil,,,,,one subject that I am very very educated in. Two enemies of an internal combustion engine, cold startup, and heat. Synthetic oils perform the best in those two areas. What kind of oil and filter do I use, does not matter, it is all a matter of marketing. What I do is, I use one brand of oil. I own 13 cars and I know if I use one brand of oil, if something needs added to, I dont have to guess what oil is in it. On my work car which I drive 50K a year, and has 175K on it, I change the oil every 5K. All other cars are changed @ 3K or once a year, which ever comes first. One thing else , people used to be brand driven, as in beer, cigarettes, gasoline. Not so much anymore, but if you want to start a heated argument, ask a group of guys which oil is the best, seen many many near fist fights. Seems people are still brand driven on motor oils. Very interesting comments here, some I have heard many times and a couple fairly new thoughts. It is great to live in a country where we can buy and use products as we wish, and that freedom of speech is a nice constitutional right. In my humble opinion some of the posts are completely correct and none are completely wrong. Many factors to decide on which oils are good and which are not good, such as metalurgy, additives, enviromental extremes to mention just a few.

the best oil is CLEAN oil. my toyota had 253,000 on it when i blew a head gasket.
i changed the oil every 5000 or so. but then i almost exclusively did highway driving. like the earlier post, starting an engine is the worst thing you can do to it. my other car... i did the oil when i did the toyotas' oil. 5000 miles came out to every two months. so my other car got its' oil done every two months whether it needed it or not. (which came to 1500 miles.) my toyotas' oil was always cleaner than that of my other car which in my opinion supports the "starting is bad" theory. i acutally did some math...in 5000 miles, i started my toyota around 120 times. twice a day ... to and from work. roughly 41 miles every time i start the truck. my other car averaged about 12 miles per start-up.an odd way of figuring, i know. but in my book, 3000 for an oil change is media hype from those old days when oil wasn't nearly as refined as todays' oil. lotsa highway driving (light duty if you will) 3000 is overkill. losta short trips and lots of idling, not even 3000. every 2 months as filters go, the wix filter inside is way ahead of fram. (saw the actual filters cut open). sorry for the long posting
