What is the best tire size for my 15x7 front wheels and 15x8 rear wheels if I want a nice beefy tire that adds some height but wont rub or hit? I am using 4" back space. Would 245/60/15 work. Can I go bigger?

    Thanks

If you like 60 series-235/60 front,255/60 rear.70 series go with 2o5/70 front,235/70 rear. The 70 series are pretty tall, but fill the fenderwell up if you like that look.60s look better on a car thats been lowered a bit.

I don't remember my front tire size...the car is back home in Louisiana, so I'll check when I go back. I run a 275/60R15 on the back though... I have a 4 inch backspacing (I think, I'll check my papers and make sure) and a set of 4 leaf rear springs from JCWhitney. I don't rub, but traction bars won't fit and I wouldn't suggest trying to drift around corners.....it would rub then.... ;-)

Correction.....I used the "Smoothie" or "Chrome Reverse" wheel in a 15x7 front size and a 15x8 rear size. These wheels have 3 3/4" backspacing. I went with a 215/65/15 tire in the front. I like it...but it's your car.... Good luck! Preston

If the tires are rubbing when you are drifting around the corners, you need to spin them faster!

    :D I wouldn't know anything about drifting....personally anyway. Unless dirt/gravel roads count...that's what I grew up on.... ;-)

    Greg,
I am running Cragar SS wheels that are 15X7 with 215/60x15 Radial TA's on the front. They don't rub, but I can't get full lock either because of the headers for the 351W conversion. Where are you in the motor city? I am in Redford.

Mine are Cragar S/S 15X7 and 15X8, but I think I have 4-1/4" BS on the rears. I can only get 145/60s in the back without rubbing on the fender, still have almost 1/2" space to the leaf spring, so if you are using 4" BS, you should be able to easily fit in 255/60. I am now running 255/60, but my Cal-Tracs keep the car from dipping in the rear enough to sink down and scratch against the fender lip. And only about 1/4" space before I hit the leaf spring.

Details and pictures on my website at http://scooper77515.fordmaverick.net/may2006.htm

I have 215/60 on the front, and have no issues with them.

I'm running 295-50-15 on rear 15x8 on both of my mavericks with 4" back spacing and it fills the wheel-wells nice !!!!! only a very little rub on the inner wheel well at the steepest driveway at a 45 degree angle crossing...but if you drive on the semi-straight on steep stuff thier is no rubbing... thier is a .50 inch clearance at the leaf spring... just see if the tire store will trial fit at least one side or buy used tires for trial fitting before buying the good stuff !!!!! good luck

Tire widths will be different from brand to brand for the same stated size. My 265/50/15 Coopers are only a 1/4 inch wider than a friends 245/60/15 BFGs. They should be at least 3/4" wider if all brands used exact measurements.

BFGs tend to run big. On my wife's previous car, we went from Goodyears to BFGs, and they were almost 2 inches taller, even though they were the same designated size.

Use the sizing chart for that each brand that your tire dealer should have. A lot of them are online too. These will give you accurate sizes. Then measure your car with the bare wheel mounted. These cars can vary from side to side, and if you have 30 years of wear on the suspension, that can be a factor too.

All that being said ... 245s ought to fit the rear of these cars across the board as long as you are using a stock offset, or a wheel that moves the tire outboard a little. They tend to be tight near the spring. Go bigger than 245, and you really need to look at specifics in order to stay out of trouble.
