Does 22 inches of vacuum seem high for an idle reading? 88 roller cam 5.0, with a 2 barrel motorcraft. Bone stock. Gets plenty of fuel, has a loud VAAAROOOM when the throttle is opened up. (Gotta love sound effects right? LMAO) I have a bored out 2 barrel, motorcraft,, thought of trying. Im wondering if the roller cam profile creates alot of vacuum pressure to run the EFI better?? Just picked up new front wheel cyls for the brakes. and a new chain for the anchor out the rear so it will stop,,, drums on the front, drums were lightly grooved and they cleaned up nice. New shoes, new wheel cyls, should help a bit right??? I took the new wheel cyl apart,, to see whats inside,, looks like they let the front pad side of the cyl, have more travel in the piston,, also has a different spring too,,, one side also has direct access to the line pressure, and the other side is metered thru a divider plate, with a tiny hole drilled into it so fluid passes thru,, to get fluid to both cyl pistons,,, I thought of drilling out the hole,, a little more,, Im wondering if it would help put more pressure on that side of the cyl to get a better brake out of drums,,,, Dont want disk brakes,,, I know, Ive seen em, Id love to,, but I dont get much over 50 mph on my commutes, and dont come up to stop signs at 50 either,, so the drums will do fine for me,,, LOL!!! Dont know what im thinking on rear axle, and brakes,,, thought of swapping out the old one for a new one,, whats a good junk yard weekend swap out canidate for a rear axle for a Maverick??
Been so long since I had a stock 302 not really sure how much vacuum you should see. Take a look at this link and click on the animation for you explanation on your brakes http://auto.howstuffworks.com/drum-brake1.htm
Porterfield makes the best brake shoes. They are the best up-grade on drum brakes you can make. Just make sure brake system is up to speed. Look for some Ford V-8 wheel cyl. They will put a little more stopping power in your drum brake system.
What roller cam are you running ? The 94-up F4TE roller gives the highest vacuum readings of all the O.E. rollers. Works fantastic with a carb. Just like it's got EFI. "No pedal startups" at 25*F.
Yep, the stock EFI roller cams have something like 114* or 115* LSA, very little overlap and lots of vacuum. And their efficiency starts to drop off after about 4500 rpm.
That may be true of the "base" roller, but not of the others. The F4TE pulls to 6000 with 1.7 rockers and improved heads. LSA on it is 116*
Factory specs for idle vacuum are: 17 to 21 inches. If you are getting more than that then count your blessings.
All cyls have exactly 150psi. Been thinking of a new timing chain set. I had the heads off it a while back, cleaned,, cleaned, new head gaskets, put it back together. The brakes are much better after turning the drums, still working out the adjustments, for now,, it stops alot better! What is a better rear axle swap? Are there any "bolt in" heavier built units? I figured if I have to do the rear brakes too,,,,,,, might see what my best options are,, little brakes on the rear,,,, 1.5 X 9,,, Id be happy with a set up just like the front,,, wider drum and pad surface. Years back in high school,, had a 66 ranchero,, had full drums all the way around it,, seemed to stop just fine when they all worked!! Also thinking of sub frame connectors,, or possibly a 4pt roll bar to help stiffen things up a little. Its not that im gonna beat it up,, but the country roads out here,, can wear out cars in a hurry over a few months.... cant hurt to stiffen things up.
The long block is out of a 88 t-bird sport. Had a AOD behind it, When I got it, the fuel pump died in the t-bird, So Those being salty, I put on a carb,,,,, was gonna put the 5.0 in the maverick anyways,, and it found its way in the maverick. I kept the reverse water pump and the serpentine belt,, with a beat up broken down t-bird radiator in it, it dont get over 180, and never builds pressure in the system. I havent put in a maverick radiator yet,,, soon though,, But I think that reverse water pump makes a big differece in keepin em cool.
Want better brakes? Look at swapping a set of discs off the 92-up Crown Vic/Marquis. These bolt onto the small bearing 8 & 9" housings.
Flat black 69.5 my 66 ranchero has the heavy duty drum brakes which are a little wider than the standard. i belive they are the same as on a mustang. if you fool with the brake line setup i can almost promise you that they will pull one way with you' good luck with your project.
DO NOT DRILL OUT ANY BRAKE PART. The larger the holes the less braking you will get. A non power master and system uses smaller bores in the master and wheel cyl to get more pressure with less effort. Enlarging the passages will work opposite.... DO NOT DRILL out anything.
I didnt drill it, figured it would void my warranty. I got the brakess adjusted, working very well and very happy to get it to stop! The drums were not straight, I turned em myself, and only took .010 out to get a fresh surface. Had a little raised area,, the old shoes, had a split in the center of the pad,, they were made that way,,, new shoes are a full flat surface across the pad. I had inhereted my great uncles 66 falcon ranchero, he bought it new, and when I got it had only 47K miles on it. He drove it to florida a few times, and mainly drove it around the farm from fishin pond to fishin pond. When I got it, it was in a barn for 7 years,,, but, it fired right up and rove it home the day I got it. gas tank was rusty, so never really drove it much,,, sold it to a family member he fixed it up. It eithr had the 200 or the 240 6 cyl, with the cruiseomatic,,, had air shocks and cragar SS rims,, it was a great little truck/car whatever they classify them as,,,, wish I kept it,, havent seen another on in this area since! See all sorts of 66 falcons,, but never a ranchero! Do you have any pictures of your 66 ranchero??? Love to see em.
flat black 69.5 not up on posting pics yet. got a digital camera 2 years ago and still havent tried to use it. will see if my sister can post one for me. i have a 69.5 mave that is stock except for bucket seats so i am trying to keep it stock. my ranchero had a 289 in it but i put a 302 in so i will probably play with it a bit. seems like the 289 ran stronger than 302 which came out of a lincoln cont. hopefully a larger 2 barrell will help it. am getting some good info off this site when it comes to performance.good luck on your 69.5
