Alright I've got a good one here, my 72 need's painting so I got a few questions:
1.I'm going to black out the rear and I need to know if I should paint behind the bumper with the black paint or with the sweet color blue I'm paiting it and will you really going to see it anyways?
2.I'm new to the world of painting and I've got a realy old paint gun that needs replacing so I need your input on what kind of gun I should get. I'm a 16 year old guy and dont have a job so I will need the best for my money that will do an exceptable job
3.Last on my list will be. What kind of paint is best and of course cheapest

Thanks for all your help so far

get a HVLP gun....they are slowing becoming reasonable.

Checkout the gallery on my yellow car....I like that look on the tail light panel. MY OPINION.

Agree with Frank......but if your just gonna do a small area like the tail light panel, you can go with a little cheaper paint. Ward did Dave's car in HOTROD BLACK...thats a nice color.

Ok let see you said you are new at painting and you have a limited budget right? I remember when i was 16 and my buget was very limited also.So l would go with a siphon feed gun to start with, probably a $40-$50 gun would do you well.Hlvp guns are great but you need a large compressor to run them.Even though they run low pressure a low cost hlvp draws alot of cfm of air and the more you spray the cfm of air drops in the compressor and your finish quality will deteriorate, then most likely you will try and put more paint on to smooth out the finish and you will end up with a ''heavy'' looking finsh or worse yet some runs. Also you didn't say weather you are painting it gloss or semi gloss black. If you buy cheap semi gloss or flat black it will fade after a little while and you can't polish it.The best way to do this is to put flattening agent in gloss paint to keep its durability. Also when you get your new gun and paint spray a few coats on a old panel just to brush up on your painting skill and to get use to the gun, better to mess up on something thats not important then your car.Derek.

A 26 gal should do it but i wouldent use one that small to do anything big.If all your doing is tha taillight panel and some other things around the same size you will be ok.And remember you might have to play around with the paint mix a little and mix it a bit thinner that the mixing instructions say. Also when you are looking for a hlvp gun try to find one with a 1.3-1.5 fluid tip you will get a better finish.Derek.

OVERSPRAY OVERSPRAY OVERSPRAY!!!!!!! It will be on anything you don't mask up. I would recommend masking the entire car to keep the over spray off before you do any priming/painting. A little extra time invested in good masking will save you alot of polishing of overspray later.

Sand sand sand, preperation is 90% of the finished product. If anything doesnt look quite right fix it now, paint doesn't hide anything. The more time you spend now the happier you will be with the end resault. If you are using acrylic enamel sand with 400 grit,if it is basecoat clearcoat sand with at least 600.Derek.
