This is a question for the experienced painters out there.... I'm thinking about painting the rear end of the yellow Maverick black (as in the Grabber models) and perhaps the center of the hood. I would rather not paint it a "gloss" black, but perhaps a satin or matt finish. However, I don't want to paint anything that I can't wax (I've heard that some flat paints should not get wax on them). Do you have any suggestions as to what I should use? Thanks...
Not sure if they still make it ... but the painter used Dupont HotRod Black on my Grabber for the tail panel, hood and rockguard. It is fairly flat but waxable. The only thing you can't wax is if it is textured like the factory. The original paint felt like 1000 grit sandpaper so when you waxed over the black it looked like crap because you couldn't get the residue out.
i've seen the mopar guys use a flat clearcoat(think ppg makes it) on their hoods and they wax and polish them at the shows....i've been looking for some but no one has it here in spray can form.....
The black on the tail light panel and the bottom of the '73 Grabber we are working on is painted in a satin black. It's PPG black basecoat with a flattening agent added to the clearcoat. It can be waxed without it becoming glossy.
I use sherwin williams Ultra one U12739(HPU flat black fpc), withUH80 hardener and it is a good satin finish. It is the same gloss every time unlike ppg (which I still use as well) where you have to add the paste.
I used a single stage Centari - 1982 General Motors paint code D9 - 30% gloss black. For the Centari - don't add the gloss hardner or it will defeat the purpose.
