Okay, I have fabricated my new console for my gauges and electrical switches to install in. I made the console out of round stock and then tacked pieces of 26 gauges sheetmetal to the top, sides and front. Now I need to fill on the seems and smotth things out. This is where I need help. I do not have any experience or knowlesde of bodywork. Should Iuse body filler? Is that Bondo or should I use something else? Any suggestions would be appreciated
"bondo" has a bad rep, only because when used improperly, or by some dummy who refuses to read instructions. Bondo is also jus a name brand, technically its all body filler. Filler should never have to be more than a 1/4 in thick, otherwise the body work was done wrong. It wasnt intened for sculpting, just finishing. If the metal was prepped properly and the filler was mixed and applied properly, it will last allllllllooonnnng time, and it wont crack or peel like its bad rep says it will! if you are worried, use a PREMIUM filler
Bondo Thanks for the input. I picked up the materials today at lunch. I need to finish the gauge cut outs and switch holes tonight then I can start the filler work tomorrow.
If you need to make it more than 1/8" thick, you may want to try some filler that has fibers in it, like MarHide. Much stronger.
update Well, round one did not turn out as good as I expected. Dad thought it looked okay but I did not. Guess that's my OCD kicking in. Time to start over. This time I am either going to make it out of 16 gauge and cut it out on a plasma table or try to make it out of of wood. Anyone ever worked with wiggle wood?
