24 degree's is not my best weather for racing, Supposed to reach 45 by noon start time. Maybe will go up to see who shows up. Worst part would be trying to start my car and the Mavmans. Alcohol is a bear when it is cold, prime with gas, starting fluid, foul plugs, pop and fart until it finally lights off. The Maverick does have a heater in the water system, but is still cranky in this weather. January race was 61 deg. had over 200 cars trying for the 2006.00 purse. Ran a street/pro combo and then Super Pro/combo winner, runoff. With my freshened up 331 and new flying toilet injection system, it was a guess at the initial settings. Put in a "fat" pill (fuel jet) for a start, did not want to run lean and maybe detonate etc. Last year on carb and gas, ran a 9:09 in the 1000ft. First time trial in Jan, ran 8:95, dialed in a 8:90 for conditions and drew a street car first round. Spotted him almost three seconds, caught him at about 330 ft and them pedaled it and lifted for a win at 8:92 Changed the pill to a leaner one and then discoverd the tach had quit working, just have to drive it by the old "seat of the pants/ear style" Drew a decent PU with NOS bottle, caught him at the 1/8th. New I was on a fast run so lifted there, crossed the finish line ahead of him but no win light came on. Had left the 8:90 on the window and lo and behold, broke out with a 8:897. Done for the day, Mavman had almost the same thing happen only his Mav runs 7.90's with the 408 windsor. Also found out the belt drive fuel pump on mine, was running to large a crank drive pulley and turning the pump to fast causing some fuel ratio problems also. Got this all fixed and hoping to improve the et's, next time out. Maybe give it a shot today if the sun and temp cooperate.
24 degrees? The sun is shining here in Houston today, but it's too dang cold to go SPECTATE. If my car was running, I'd probably be at the track too though. Good luck to both of you if you make it out (and post up the results, please). R
dave, i didn't know people could live when it got that cold. i think anything under 50 is cold. still cool at 60. starting to get nice at 70. time to get out and work on the car at 80. was in the 80's at the track last week. seriously, good luck at the track. hope it warms up a little for you. i'll be back at the track next sunday.
Good to see your back Dave, never raced in those kind of temps but I gotta think as much as our cars like cool temps there has to be a point of diminishing return, and with alky it's a whole different ballgame I'm sure. Our track reopens next weekend for the 06 season and my motor sits waiting for pistons first points race is mid-March and I gotta get it dialed in You and Todd have fun and be safe
They actually let a SNOWMOBILE race at one of the local tracks here. He has what looks to be skate-board wheels mounted to the front 'skis'. He definetly has no problem hooking up - and runs about a 8.0 in the eighth!
we've had a couple of snowmobiles run the et finals here. they run about 135 - 140 mph in the 1/4. they run them in the mc class.
ARRRRR! Cold track (38 was the high today I believe) + temperamental alky burner (motor, not me)=problems. I did a few changes over the winter, but in the name of maintenance rather than trying to gain performance. One was replacing the 4 link rod ends. Car hooked good, then went left....but rather than let off the throttle & let the front end slam down hard, I eased up and still got out of shape pretty good. Other than that (and an oil leak at the front of the intake) it'll be good to go--until something else breaks. I did make an attempt to work with the delay box & transbrake as well. Footbraking might just be the best thing for me...though carrying the front end for 100' is kind of amusing. Old guy will put his $.02 I'm sure.
Yep, cold temp, wind from north, it really sucked. But built a fire in the barrel and had good friends keeping warm, shootin the bull and getting a couple runs in, it was still great stuff don't you know. Got the Mav and the Mont uncoverd and warmed up. First pass was in the left lane and my prediction on the right eye and crappy RT was right on. Had some problem with the foot feed sticking a little at idle and could not launch at normal rpm. Something in the toilet bowl is sticking, anyway had a .615 light and a 1.51 60ft. 694 at the 1/8th and 8.95 @ 112 in the thousand foot. Was stuttering a bit then would come on strong at a few points in the run. Changed the pill to a litlle leaner and messed with the sticky problem. Could not get it to stop but was better than before. Shivering around the fire, decided to make one more pass for info on the changes we made, and then head for the warm confines of the living room at the house. Right lane this time, .559 light but was too lean and only sqeaked out a 7.15 1/8th and 9.25 @ 107 at the 1000. Parked it and removed the injection system to take home and do some investigating on the sticky deal. Will split the differance on the pill size next time, and see what happens. EGT on the last run was 1358 degrees, should be around 1250, so am in the ball park, with a bit richer pill installed, should be close. Other than that, life is still good when I am at the track.
You guys are hardcore...of course given the oppurtunity I'd a done the same thing...think back on this day one Saturday afternoon in August..
Okay, I'll step up for those of you being quiet and scratching your heads as I am. What the heck is 'toilet bowl' in Drag speak? Seth
Seth it's an alchohol injection system referred to as a flying toilet or ron's flying toilet after the inventor...I believe it sits directly on top of the carb, Todd or Dave can tell us how it works exactly.
yep, simply put it's an alcohol injection system. like fuel injection that sits on top of the intake. you can go to http://www.ronsfuel.com/ for a look at it. ron is from tucson, az.
