as u all might know im trying to get the bugs worke dout of my 70 maverick so i can finally drive it some instead of looking at it ,ive went with a stock 302 -c-4 3.00 rear gears .The 302 had doug thorley headers ,weiand action-plus intake ,600 holley vacsec. unilite distributor. LAter on i wanna get more power but still very streetable here is some of my thoughts AFR 165 heads comp cams 262 or 268 xtreme cam flat tappet 9.5-1 compression weiand stealth intake keep the 600 holley change gears 3.25 fresh c-4 with shift kit and 2500 stall now does this sound like a good combo give me thoughts and suggestions i have a open ear
i think you have a descent combo in mind. I would not go with the afr 185s. I have two friends one has the 165 and one has the 185. The smaller head car wins every time.(The rest of their combos are about the same. The 165s make more usable power on a 302-306 motor that is why afr builds them. If you descide to stroke it i would step up the heads
I would go with the 185's at least no point in getting the 165's when you can have room with the 185's to grow.. To say if you wanted to build a 347 stroker in the future the 185's would be great! and you can still get awesome power with the 185's with just a 302 It's all about your combo.. There is a great website That i'm sure many people here know about it's www.sbftech.com great people that give out no bs
my... 9.5:1 AFR 165s 600 Holly 3:55 RPM Performer 347 ran great... I think the AFR 165s will be great on a stock 302... ......
Looks like a good street combo to me I would bump the gears up some though, no point in going from a 3.00 to a 3.25 to me. I would be looking for 3.55-3.90 range unless your cruise speed is 70mph plus
I agree with the 3.50+ rear gear ratio - regardless of your cruising speed. 3500 rpm won't hurt your engine at all.
Yup, I ran 4.10's in my GTO with a 3500 covertor. It spun 3800 RPM all the way to Portland and the only thing that got hurt was my wallet!
Personally with your combo I would use performer rpm heads. Deck the block to 0 and use a good flat top piston for street performance. A good hyd. roller cam with short duration and 5.48 lift. 750 on the carb. 3200 stall converter and at least 3.55 gear in the rear. JMO
i want to stick with a flat tappet cam either the comp xtreme or a voo doo with a max rpm of around 6200rpms .The 3.25 gear might not be enough gear but it would cruise better but hey ill keep the 3.55-3.80 gear in mind just all depends after driving for a while with a stock engine i might decide this combo isnt enough .I dont wont a full time dragcar but something very fun
A 750 is to big a carb for a 302-306. A 600 would do fine or maybe step up to a worked 600 like a aed or proform. A 750 would be for a drag 302-347. I used a aed 750 on my 408 and made 460hp/485tq to the wheels running rich. That motor was in a daily driver about 9-1 comp. Do the math a 600 is perfect for a 302 combo MAYBE a 650 on a well built one.
