For the last few months, this car of mine has been using coolant, and could not figure out where. No smells, no drips, no runs, no coolant inside the car, nothing. A friend of mine today ran a HC test (hydrocarbon) on it with an emmision tester, and found combustion gasses in the coolant. I guess it is time for a head gasket set, or new heads, or a new motor, depending on what I find when I take the engine apart. I really hate to do this, because the engine runs so good, has good power, and doesn't miss a beat. Just gets hot after about an hour on the road, from losing coolant. Wish me luck!

I have a 302 engine sitting in my garage that did exactly the same thing. It kept losing coolent but we never found any on the ground. We pulled the engine and dropped another 302 in our Maverick and now the orginal 302 is sitting until we find time to figure out what the problem is. When you find out what your engines problem is, let us know. It could be that my engine may have the same problem.

Jean; will do. I'm hoping it is just a head gasket. I have another set of heads, so even that isn't a killer. If it is the block, things will just have to sit a while. I should be getting the engine apart in a few weeks, and I will let you know. Later,
    Earl

I had the same problem...but in a newer car, a 3.8 powered 94 t bird. Problem is, the car ran great, and I kept driving it, until finally I wound up at a gas station with my pistons filled with water, Now I have a bad head gasket and a bad starter...My bad.
