Wanting to get my bumpers back to chrome. Previous owner painted them black and didn't prep the chrome. From what I can tell it is still in decent shape under there(paints chipping). Was curious if paint thinner or stripper would hurt the chrome or if I'm safe to go ahead and proceed.
Some strippers are very caustic and not water soluble. Some are water soluble. Some read as "green" and (more or less) safe. JASCO has a web-site, and under "contact", you could ask about removing paint from chrome: http://www.wmbarr.com/jasco/default.aspx Perhaps to ensure that the chrome isn't etched, I'd try lacquer thinner, acetone, or methyl ethyl keytone - to be on the safe side.
Pretty sure any chrome shop will strip the bumpers in the process of chroming them if that is the route you want to go. I would think any paint stripper (Lowe's, Menards, Home Depot) will do the job.
The chrome underneath looks to be in good shape from what I can tell through the multiple chips in the paint. Going to just strip the paint off and see what's under there. Who knows, may just need a good polishing and can skip the whole rechroming process.
