So my 71 skinny front bumper is a little warped and has a small golf ball size dent in the front. (probably hit a stop sign). Anyway to straighten the bumper and strip the chrome off the shop wants nearly 250$ . Is it just me or is that way high? To rechrome I'm looking at around 500+ ! total. what does a new steel one go for?

They are not available new so repairing an old one is your only choice. Was the price you were quoted $250 or $500 + I am confused with how you have it written.

Most shops will fix small ding and twist back in shape free with the re-chrome. I paid $280 per bumper

So the price break down for the bumper is.
    100 to straighten
    50 to strip
100 the prep metal finish for paint.

I would shop around, I would think you could get it straightened and re-plated for around $300. Guess it depends on where your located.

Around here. $300 would be about half price.

My front sounds almost exactly like yours. It had a golf ball sized crater right in the center peak. To straighten and re-chrome was around $330, but man it looked brand new. I then primed, painted and rubber undercoated the backside of it before bolting it on.
