My 302 mav is burning oil, i know theres no quick fix but i just like to know if it would be my rings or my vavles if i put a peice of carb board behind the muffler and let it sit for idling for like 5 min there is a little bit of oil on the cardboard.. i was just wondering if that would be vavles or rings or how do i check
The easy way is to use a leakdown tester. Or, you can use a compression guage. Do a compression test on one cylinder and record the reading. Remove the hose from the cylinder and put a little bit of oil down in the cylinder, then do another test. If the reading increases a lot, that's a sure sign of worn rings. Dont forget PCV system...sometimes the little pcv valve can become stuck and allow oil to be pulled into the intake manifold. Also could be a leaky intake manifold gasket pulling oil into the intake runners around the leaky gasket. Those are just a few causes of oil usage/smoking. I'd try the simple stuff first, and I'm sure others will add more tips/suggestions. Good luck
Could some one post a pic of the PCV system, I have heard of it but im not sure what people are talking about. Im pretty sure its not the rings I was not doing this until recently when i rebuilt the carb it started to happen
how many miles before you add a quart? if it happened after you did the carb, maybe it isn't oil burning at all. just a real rich gas mixture?
I exhuast did smell a little rich and, also i was toping off my oil and noticed that if i pulled that little hose from the carb of the valve cover alot less oil came out and when i put it back on oil came out
Many forget about the valve guide seals. When they get brittle, they can let oil past into the cylinders. I believe that may be the problem I'm having with oil fouling with my 4 door 250.
