I have two 1970 Mavericks, the first is a grabber that only had a transmission when purchased, the 2nd was purchased as a parts car. the parts car was a running, driving car. The Grabber is a floor shift and the parts car is a column shift. went to install the engine/trans into grabber this weekend I realized i needed to swap over the external linkage and bellhousing.
After pulling valve bodys and bellhosings to switch overparts over I realized that the case is different, the grabber trans has an area notched out for the shift detent ? I know that they both were I6 cars but the grabber had a bellhousing that would bolt up to a 302. does the grabber have a larger 6 cyl engine than a standard Maverick? although prior owner had just pulled out an inline 6 ? not really sure what to do because the torque convertor/bellhousing off of the base maverick needs to be used to work with engine but the case and linkage from the Grabber need to be used to work with the car... Any input would be appreciated greatly...

ok, This is an easy one for you. take the engine out and then remove the bell housing from the trans in the doner car. Then just replace the bell housing on the driver with it and bolt it up and install the engine. Easyer to do out of the car. Do all the swap out of the car and install as a unit all bolted together. the smaller I6s had a different bell housing than the 250 I6.

    Trans question

Ok here is the next problem,I have swapped the bellhousings but in order to use the transmission from the origional car and keep it a floor shift case, the main shaft spline count is different and I would have to remove the entire drum from the donor car and install it in case of the grabber.
I would have to do this because the larger inline 6 must use a flexplate with its own ring gear like a v-8 car but the smaller 6 has the ring gear as part of the torque convertor. what a pain...

sounds like one of the 6cyls. was a ...200...
    the...shift lever...is installed upside down in the...column shift...transmission...compared to the...floor shifter...
I think you will have to drop the ...valve body...to flip it...
PaulS...is the C4 guy here and he will be on shortly with your answer...

You cant just flip it over, it is longer than the floor shift one and the gears will not shift correctly. You need to change it out with a floor shift one, in that case just take the linkage out of the old trans and install it in the one that came out of the doner car and use the doner trans. make shure you use the internal parts out of the doner car like the valve location plate or what ever its called. Then use the entire unit from the doner car.

I did this years ago, I seem to remember taking the shift lever from one transmission and putting it into the other, and swapping the neutral safety switch.(they were both v-8 cars)

It sounds like you have one C4 that was for the 1970 and another that was made for an earlier car. Both 1970 transmissions will have the same splines for the converter. If you have tags on the transmissions that have the build info you should share that first. I can then tell you what transmissions you have - include with the ID numbers which tranny was original and which one you want to use.

This is all way too confusing for an old man - 1970 C4s used 26 spline input shafts - only the 64-69 C4s used the 24 spline input shafts.
