Well, for the last couple of weeks, my C-4 has been slipping going into 2nd gear. I use to be able to get rubber. Then took a small trip today (weather was beautiful). When I arrived at my destination, the car wouldn't go into park. I got home with no problem. Decided to check the shifter linkage. I noticed a stud with a 3/4 inch nut on the end of it, the nut was about 1" from the trans. I screwed it back in with my fingers. Had the wife work the shifter. Now it only goes into 1st & 2nd. I've lost all other gears. I gave PaulS a call (the C-4 guru). He told me that was the adjustment stud & nut for the band. Told me I need to take the pan off & drop the valve body. Have to realign everything. It'll be a cheap fix, 6 quarts of type F trans fluid & a pan gasket. Paul said he would drop by tomorrow & give me a hand getting it back together. What a guy! Maverick/Comet guys are the greatest. I'll let you know how it goes....

Well it's finished. Took a little over 3 hours. I'm not use to doing things on my back, with the car on jack stands. Midas spoiled me, with lifts. Getting old sucks! Damn, I ache & hurt all over. Anyway, managed to get it apart. The band had come apart and was laying on top of the valve body. Got the band back together, then it was time to reinstall the valve body. What a pain in the butt. Hard to see the piston that has to be just right, so you can shift all gears. 1st try not so good. It was binding & wouldn't shift except for 1st & 2nd gear. Took it out again. This time lined up the pin, with a bolt hole, for the pan (reverse gear). Gave it another try. Woohoo!!! It shifts through all the gears. Put it back together & test drove it. It's much, much better. Still has a slight slip in 2nd gear. PaulS said he needs to take the trans apart & replace the band. Not at this time, Paul! I want to cruise this summer. He said he'll build a trans & have it ready, when I'm ready for it. Then I'll take this one to him to rebuild, for my 70 Grabber. Cliff, "I'm On The Road Again". Thanks PaulS, for all your help & expertise. Couldn't have done it without you.... I'll know what to do, if I ever have that problem again....

Coop, if it is the second gear band i broke one of those on the grabber in early 90. the guy who replaced it was able to pull the broken band out and feed the new one in from under the car (on a not so painful lift) it only took him about four hours and i drove it many years after that with no problems. im sure pauls could do that if needed just so you have a good band for now.

Yes! PaulS told me we could do that with the band. It would be a temporary fix. Until he could rebuild it. I told him it would be fine for now. Not going under car on jack stands for awhile. I'm sore. Need to heal. Thanks for the info....

I am glad there was nothing broken in the C4 but the band being worn that much is not good for the future. I am going to have a new transmission to go in the Heartbreaker befor the Colby cruise. Coop may need some help getting it in there though.
I wish I could be of more help.

I'd have to do it from the bottom, in the carport. No lift available. I don't like using jack stands. But, you have to do what you have to do....
