Our c-4 doesn't shift out of 2nd, and has a pretty rough grinding you feel in the floor when you put it in gear. Are we better off to rebuild or purchase a TCI from Summitt for about the same price. How do you know if a 72 302 is a large or small bellhousing? Thanks
Hi rebelgt, I am planning to rebuild my C-4 on my own. I can get the parts (including high performance clutches and steels) for about $200. I am also doing it for the experience. I can't advise on the TCI from Summit. I know you can get a rebuilt C-4 from Autozone for $400 - $450, with a guarantee. The way to tell if it's a large bell or a small bell: If the tranny dipstick goes into the case, it's a small bell. If the tranny dipstick goes into the pan (or near the pan, it's a large bell. If I am correct, most cars were small bells and trucks were large bells. Regards, BaldEagleMav
There are two ways to tell which bellhousing you have. you can measure the depth or you can count the number of teeth on the flywheel. 157 teeth means that you have the small bell and 164 means you have the large bell. measuring the depth from the engine mounting surface to the pump if you have one that is 5 7/8" it is the small bell if it is 6 1/4" then you have the large bell. ALL Mavericks came with a small bell. That doesn't keep you from running qacross a sap now and again. Those danged hot rodders will put anything into their cars that they can get cheep.
