    Hello all!!!

My hubby has a '70 Maverick. We need to know if it has a C4 or C6? It is a inline 6 200ci. The tranny took a dump on him a week ago. We are thinking that it would be more cost effective to just replace the tranny rather than rebuild it.

First tell me what tranny is in the car and then I would appreciate your opinions on the having it replaced or fixed. And if you could point me in the right direction to get a replacement would be awesome.

BTW, I'm in the Houston, Tx area.

    Thanks guys!!!

it's a c4. probably cheaper if you can find someone who rebuilds them. call some of the tranny shops and ask for a price for a rebuilt one. someone from the houston area may know someone trustworthy to do yours for a better price. good luck. :)

Just a note on the 200 6cyl. c4. The bellhousing is different than any other c4 like the 250 or 302's. Be sure to keep that in mind if you are replacing it.

I didn't have any problem bolting a 200 bell housing on a trans originally from a 250.

Okay guys...we have come across a used rebuilt C4 with only 4000 miles on it, but the only thing it is out of a '66 Mustang. I know that the Mustang is the sister car to the Maverick, so it should work fine. But the guy informed me that the shift patterns were different in the '65-'67 C4s(p r n 2 d 1)...and I know the shift pattern in our Maverick is different from that. My question is..would that make a difference in the installation?

Secondly, the guy is asking $300 for the tranny. In your opinion, is this a good deal? I need to know ASAP...he has someone else interested, but he is giving me first shot.

Your input would be greatly appreciated!!!:)

The pre '70 C-4s had a 24 spline input shaft where as the '70 and up had a 26 spline. The torque convertor would have to match the spline count. So... the transmission might not work unless it has the convertor(for a 200-6) with it. As for the shift pattern, I think in 2, it takes off in 2nd then shifts to 3rd. In D it starts in 1st then shifts to 2nd then to 3rd. Also the shifter arm might not match yours(transmission came out of a floor shifted car and yours is a column shift), but you could probably change the arms out. I think the kickdowns are different(mustangs used a cable to pull the arm and mavericks uses a rod to push the arm). I'm sure if you could find a racer/hobbyist to rebuild your transmission you could get it done for $300, maybe less. If you needed a new convertor, it would be an extra cost, unless your convertor is still good and you could just get it flushed out.

I had quotes for as low as $300 for rebuilding a trans. A good strong rebuild for racing only $500. How bad did you screw up the one you have.

Where in Houston, and what does the car look like?

I am in Angleton, south near Lake Jackson. I have seen only a few mavericks in Houston and the surrounding area, and just wondered if I have seen yours.

The C-6 is heavier, takes more power to spin, and doesn't fit a Maverick without modification. Stick with the C-4...

Where did you get those quotes from? Please let me know.

Well, it will not go in gear...although reverse is fine.

We live in Cypress. It is a forest green color. I doubt that you have seen it. It is his work vehicle. I don't have any pics on this computer or else I would post some up.

Sounds like the forward clutch and or forward clutch piston seals.
