Well my maverick is an automatic. And When I put it into drive it doesn't feel like it really even goes into drive. It goes forward very very little and then doesn't go forward at all... I'm very annoyed by this problem too :/
well if the fluid is black and smells burnt and wont go nowhere pretty sure trans is burnt up i would invest in a new one or get that one rebuilt
Patrick, Burnt fluid and little or no movement in drive is a good indication that the forward clutches are burnt up. If you also don't have reverse then it is likely that the direct clutches are also burnt up. The only option at this point is an overhaul or a replacement. If you tell me a little about the engine and rest of your set up I can more easily give advice on what to do. Paul
Ok so My engine is a 200 ci Straight 6. And today I took off my transmission filter to see if it needed a new one and that's not the case. I have reverse but not always forward. The transmission fluid I took out was really really dark and milky but no metal in it. Any ideas yet????
If I am right you have lost the forward clutches. They may be burnt because of a bad piston apply seal or they may have just worn to the point where they were slipping and finally burnt the fluid. Since it will need to come apart to even just repair the forward clutch it costs little more to have the whole transmission rebuilt. You will end up with a reliable transmission that should last another thirty years with proper maintenance and care.
Well, I have no idea what it costs in Tennesee but on the west coast it will run between $900 and $1500 for a full rebuild with converter. Prices vary so much that you are going to have to call around if you want it done for you. If you do it yourself the parts necessary for a full rebuild will run between $250 and $500. "Bad Shoe Productions" has a great video on rebuilding the C4 and Haynes has a tech book called "Ford Automatic Transmission Overhaul" that has a good write-up on rebuilding the C4. You can get a rebuilt C4 that is modified for up to 500 hp from Jay at Broader Performance for $850 but you will need to get a converter on top of that price.
Ok, so I'm assuming you were right Paul. So I contacted a friend of the family who does nothing but works on transmissions. He's charging me $525 to do a rebuild and that includes the parts he needs. I'll ask him what's wrong with it after he finishes. Let's hope it doesn't take too long because I'm just itching to drive my maverick lol
Patrick we're having the exact same problems with my newly put-together Mav too. We're thinking of rebuilding the C4 tranny ourselves instead of sending it out to someone, or getting another one from the junkyard that we're just not sure of. Anyone know of a good place to get a C4 tranny rebuild kit for a V8 302? It's for the 73 Mav; we finally just got the whole engine rebuilt and put in, now the tranny (that was working previously) is being a butt. VERY frustrating!
www.bulkpart.com sells kits and more. you need a master over haul kit, a front band, green stripe vacuum modulator, and a rear servo piston. You should consider a new rear bushing and front pump bushing as well.
