I have a factory double sided C4 shifter arm that I would like to put in my current C4 in my car. How hard is it to change this out? I know you have to drop the pan and possibly remove the valve body? How hard is this to do and can it be done in the car? Does anyone have any pictures of this? I don't do a lot with transmissions so this one is still new to me.

It is messy but not hard. There is a single nut that holds the lever in the transmission. The valve body does need to be dropped to get access to it. I believe I installed a shift kit and deep sump aluminum pan at the same time to justify the job. If you do it there are two seals that you should replace. One is in the case and the lever slides through it. The other is an o-ring seal. One of the arrows is pointing to the lever with the nut on it.

Thank you! Exactly what I needed. How hard is it to drop the valve body? I have a few spare C4s that I can practice on before I attempt it on the one in my car.

The valve body is held in with a few bolts, very easy to pull. If you have a C4 laying about it may not hurt to familiarize yourself with it before tearing into the good one.

The spring in upper portion of photo is the assist spring to help "kick" trans out of park. It's the reason '60s & '70s Ford transmissions were prone to jumping from park to reverse. After several law suits Ford sent customers a sticker to be placed on dash. Said in addition to being sure lever was fully in park, also set PARKING brake.

Generally if I'm going to be running engine, I shift to Neutral and and set brake.

I have 3 or 4 that I can mess around with. I still have to pull the lever out of its current transmission so I might as well practice on that one.

Also do you have a name for the seals that I will need to replace or some where to buy them? Worst case I can always go to my local transmission shop and have them order them for me.

Hey anybody out there who has done this got some advice for a guy??? I'm in the process of switching my Mav from a factory auto column shift to a factory auto floor shift. I've got a C4 and have to change the shift lever to the dual arm version. Everything was going fine, exactly as expected.....then...of all things, the stupid seal in the transmission case WILL NOT come out. This is a stupid problem to have, but a problem none the less. Is there something I'm missing? At this point it has to be changed because even if it was ok before I'm sure I've damaged it at this point. Any help would be appreciated.

For clarity I'm talking about the seal on the outside of the case where the shift lever passes through, not the little "O" ring.

With the shift lever out, you should be able to pop it out with a screwdriver.

That is exactly what I expected to do, but it's not coming out. The inside diameter (not sure how to describe it) separated and peeled out, but the outside is stuck. I'm gonna get a little more serious tomorrow after work I guess.

Just don't forget this little baby. That and don't tighten down on the valve body to hand and unevenly. It only the bolts only need appx 24 INCH POUNDS, (not FOOT POUNDS) of torque. Biggest mistake is over tightening them and warping the valve body.

also when tightening the lever down on install...hold the leaver so it doesn't bottom out the arm on the case. the arm broke on Earl's C-4 but it could just have been a fluke...no need to take a chance of it happening to yours.

Try not to scratch the surface with screwdriver, potential to leak through when new gasket seal is installed.
