Someone just told me that a C4 behind a V-8 motor is different from a C4 behind an I6 motor. Something about there being more clutches. I really don't know much about the trannys so any help would be appreciated.

While we are on the subject...
    What the heck is a "semi-auto C4"???
    Available on early 70s Fords.
    What is semi about it?

I wonder if you are talking about the ability to put it in second and take off in second.
There are alot of different c4's out there and some have more clutches than others. pre70 have different valve bodies than post 70's just as a start.
Pinto's and Mustang II's had a different valvebody all together.
I am finishing up my first c4 rebuild this morning and going to install it in my 71 F100 today. I sure hope it works. lol
I got the kit from Broader in Texas and it is supposed to build the tranny up to hold 500hp. Not that I have that but figured in a truck it could'nt hurt.

One of the big things to look for in the C4, is the number of clutch discs in the foward clutch drum. There were 3-4- and 5 discs. If the ID tag is gone, a visual teardown is required. Most tags with a PFE prefix have the five disc, and also most pan fill trannys do too, but not always. With the age of these units and number of times beig rebuilt and swapped between vehicles, sometimes is a guessing game what is in them. You can also look for cases with an H or C coded servo, they are likely 5 disc too. For stock performance, a 4 disc properly built will do just fine, for real hot shoe's, the five disc is better and can also be reworked for 6-7 and up, disc's, there many other modifications that can be done for all out racing and performance. The semi-automatic that was asked about, is probably refering to the early one that came with a manual valve body from Ford. Don't recall the year or model though, archives on this board should have some post's on all this stuff.

The C4S semi-automatic was available in the Maverick in 70.

    I knew there was a semi-auto available.
I wanted to know how it was different enough to be called 'semi'.
I always had the impression that it was basically a clutchless manual tranny, or an auto that must be shifted manually.
I don't know, I was just asking since it was a Maverick tranny and I figured someone here had experience with them.
