I changed my transmission fluid and filter a year ago and thats where it all started.I know I put the same amount of fluid back in that I took out,I measured it.Anyway,I cant say that right away I had a problem but within a day or 2 it started spewing out the overflow valve bad.I eventually figured that it would just run out the extra and then it would be fine and thats what happened. No more leaks for months until now.I was driving down the road the other day and I'm smokin like a bitch.I thought it was the power steering leak from a bad power cylinder that just got worse, anyway it was the overflow valve this time its coming out worse than it ever was unless there is something else on the top on the tranny that fluid will come out of like that.Is there? Its still spewing and the dip is bone dry. Will someone please give me some advice or a solution to this? Thanks in advance.Tank
Be sure you replaced it with Type F. Two things happen when you replace the fluid. You introduce a thinner liquid due to years of abuse, and you also remove a layer of grime that was in there actually helping your clutches to grip. Also, don't replace it with the "same amount" as you took out. Replace it and add until your dipstick says it is the correct level. Anything more and you may have spewage.
Yeah bro,I always use Type F.Actually the reason I put the same amount I took out was because the dip just broke.Actually when I changed it the fluid looked brand new and so did the filter,I was surprised, especially since the person that had it before me didn't seem to give a damn about proper maintenance(oil dipstick end busted off hiding the fact it was 3 1/2 quarts low, busted brake line, all 4 wheel cylinders leaking,etc.).But I'm relatively new at this so maybe the new looking fluid and filter are semi normal. Is it normal to see metal shavings in the filter?Thats what I always heard but there weren't any.Always knew about the grime helping things out though.
If dipstick is broken, then the guy before you had no idea how much was in there either. Get another dipstick. Ask on here, should be easy to find. Without the dipstick, you have no idea how low/full/overfull you are. With a random amount being in the converter depending on how long it has sat between the last run and the time you drain it, it would be very difficult to guess how much you need to add. Overfilling is the main reason for spewing. That is the reason for that overflow valve. I think the simplest solution before you keep banging your head over this is ask for a dipstick. Might be able to snag one from the auto parts stores for $10 and then KNOW where you are. Previous owner undoubtedly just refilled it with a guessed amount before selling it to you. His mechanic skills sound pretty poor, and I doubt he could guess the fluid level without the dipstick.
Ok heres the deal,as embarrassing as it is to admit,it wasn't the overflow vent after all...it was the damn rubber line connecting the transmission line together...it was leaking under a hose clamp I overtightened because the rubber was so hard I had to crank the hell out of it to keep it from slipping.Anyway,it finally ate through a few small holes and was shooting straight up against the passenger carriage and I assumed it was the overflow vent because it was landing in 3 different places like when the overflow valve spews and in a huge amount.Even though I was looking straight at the line while it was gushing it was too dark to tell lol.Thats my story and I'm sticking to it haha.I feel pretty damn dumb at the moment but I'll be laughing about it soon enough lol.
