Hey Guys, Did Mav's come with C4's only? A friend of mine was saying that he thought he had a '71 Mav one time with a C3...which I've never heard of. Just curious...thanks for any clarification. Later,
I'm assuming that's the C4S. It was a semi automatic tranny. Basically you had to shift it manually, but it had no clutch. I've only read about them in the manuals - I've never seen or driven one.
Chilton's says it's basically the same as the C4, but with a few differences in the valve body and other internals.
I have seen one with the semi-auto and almost bought it. Looking back now...I should have. It was absolultey cherry except for the massive front end damage.....but it was fixable. That is the only one I have ever seen.
Yes, there is a C3. It was a budget (lightduty) 3 speed auto found in 74-78 Pinto, Bobcat, Mustang II and Capri. Not good for anything with some HP's, so you don't hear much about them. As far as a C4S, I've never worked on one, driven one, or heard of one. But that doesn't mean they didn't make one. The only shiftable automatic I remember was in an old Merc from the 50's. Early Merc-O-Matic or Cruise-O-Matic maybe? Eric
That's how I drive my C4 I was thinking that the select shift tranny was also called the cruise-0-matic. Seems like I saw it in one of my manuals. I'll check sometime this week and just see what it has to say. Preston
That's right, I remember reading about them in my chilton's when I first got the comet ...... made in Japan I believe ..... Robert
the c-3 is in the maverick and is more then likely in your car it is something like a c-4 look at my post c3? because iam in the need of a rebuild and if your all good ill post pics.ha ha ha travis e mccarney
Here are the C3 and C4 pan gaskets. You can compare yours to see what you have. Looking at the pan is one of the best ways to ID a tranny.
If I remember right, the C 3 came with the lower hp engines, mostly 4 bangers but they may have used it with the 170 and 200 sixes in some cars. I think it had an interchangeble bellhousing so it could be used with sixes and fours just by changing the bellhousing.
