Hello again. I'm starting to look for cam for my 74 Grabber. 302 w/ 600 Holloy and 4:11 gears. As I have mentioned many times before, I am not a wrench so I need help on just about every decision. What I am looking for is an agressive sounding cam that will add H.P. to my engine and sound great on the street. I am not going to race the car but I don't mind if it sounds race ready. How much H.P. will a cam add?

    Many Thanks

    Mav-Rick,

IMHO, it depends on a few things:

    a) Where do you want your power, up high or down low. A lot depends on your existing converter's stall (if so equipped) and if you want to change that out as well (it would be a good time).

    b) Do you want to 'spring' for new springs? A higher lift cam (more aggressive) is going to require that those be changed out (typically for anything over a .500" lift).

    c) Are you willing to have your idle rpm raised (significantly) to keep the car running?

    d) A lot will determine how much you have budgeted for the change. May as well put a new waterpump in while you're at it along with a new timing chain and gears.

A visit to Compcams would benefit you also (http://www.compcams.com/). They will advise you of which cam to go with. The ultimate decision is yours though.

I'm sure there are a lot of other considerations that I'm forgetting, and someone who has been there and done that on the solid lifters will join in soon.

Good luck and keep us posted.
