Can we get historical license plates on our cars?

My brother in law told me that I should consider getting some historical plates on my Mav because it may lower the bill on the insurance.

I've heard of historical plates but don't exactly know what the process is on getting them. The reason I ask about our cars having them is because I don't know if historical plates only apply to certain cars and their ages.

Can we get them? If so, what are the benfits of these plates?

All states (for now) control auto tags. You will need to check with your DMV as to what is available for your car in your state.

I can tell you about Wisconsin. Wisconsin offers Hobbiest plates for cars that are modified from stock (hotrods) and Collector plates for stock classic cars. There is also an Antique plate for pre WWII vintage cars. All are at reduced prices from regular auto tags.

    :)

PA has Classic (20+ years old) and Antique (25+ years old). Cars have to look original, no obvious modifications. No yearly state safety inspection required. Limited mileage you're allowed to drive each year and for Antique may only drive to parades, car shows, club events, etc. I drive too many miles and have too many mods on mine for special plates.

In Washington we have "collector" plates. It limits your use of the car to recreational uses only. If you drive it to work or on daily outings you can be cited or required to relicense the car. I have collector plates on my cars - I don't work any more and all my driving is recreational.

We have "Vintage" plates for anything over 30 years old. Also can run original year of manufacter plates for 76 back if the number sequence isn't already in use by somebody else. In 77 they went to keeping the same tags for 5 years, only changing the year decal every year. Earlier tags didn't have the decals, year was stamped into the tag. Like other states, they are supposed to be for limited use only, but it's not enforced.

I'm looking for an original 1974 AL tag that starts with the prefix 32-. Our tag prefix is the county you live in, 32 is Fayette county. So if any of you have one or see one for sale, let me know please.

In Conn. we have "Early American" plates. The vehicle has to be 25 years old to use them.

The huge benefit... your town can only charge you taxes based on a maximum vehicle value of $500, no matter what the car is worth! There isn't a restriction on mileage. The taxes on my 47 cost me $30 per year!!

I run "agreed value" insurance. They don't care what kind of registration I have.

Barry, have you checked into the PA "Collectible" plate? They are black with yellow lettering. I was going to try to get this plate but, as I recall reading about it, the car has to be completely finished and painted. I want to drive mine in primer before I get it painted so I guess I'll be going with a standard plate for now. You might be interested.

Here in Kansas its pretty simple. Antique plates for anything over 35 years old. No mileage requirement, no special insurance no restrictions on mods. After the initial registration price of about $75 it costs $17 a year after that. Pretty good deal there.

Here in TX you can do antique, classic, or just personalize your plate.

I went to a swap meet and bought plates with the 74 year on them, and I pay an extra $15 or 25 to sport them on my car.

That's cool Scooper, being able to run the same year plates-----legally! What a neat touch!

Might check into if it's possible here in Arkansas.

We can run YOM plates here too. I just want to find one from my home county. It starts with 32-xxxx.
We pay $25 one time only, never pay anything again unless you go back to regular yearly plate.
