Do you trust it? does it work? looks sketchy to me...will it hold a 302 and C4 combo? alum. intake and heads.. also do they hold with trans/engine out or without? or i could screw into the Alum heads.. but id rather wreck the intake if something happens lol. just not too confident with the aluminum. but i could fab up a thick carb plate within 5mins. so thats an easy option.
I have used 1 several times, but just the 302 only. I prefer to take the trans off first,so that you don,t have too liftall 6ft to get it out. Jmo
I prefer to lift it from the heads. By either using the front bolts where the alternator bolt goes into, or using the exhaust bolts. It's just easier for me.
I've pulled both 6/8 w/C-4/AOD...no problem.. I just make sure the plate is bolted tight to the intake.
All I've ever used is a carb plate. Just used one yesterday on an aluminum intake to put a 302/T5 combo back in. Trust it completely. Well, I wouldn't sleep under it, but you get the idea.
I've done just about all the motors with and without tranmissions you can think of, big chevy, small chevy, pontiac's, small ford, even a 460 with a C6 and a 390 FE..... No problems ever.....
I have never used a carb plate. When I took the 408/Powerglide out of the Maverick I had the heads off and used the head studs. Now, with that said when I put the motor/trans back in the Maverick next month it will have come from the engine dyno and there is no way I'm going to take the intake off............and the trans will be on it..........I hate crawling under the car to attach the trans.................so I will end up using a carb plate for the first time!
I lifted the 5.0/c4 together with a carb plate on an aluminum manifold. But, I use studs screwed all the way down into the manifold with nuts on the carb plate and I don't get under the lifted engine/trans.
I have installed many Big blocks 460 fords,bb chevys with trannys using a carb lifting plate with no worries.Cast intakes& heads, aluminum heads & intakes no problem.A all iron 460 with a c6 weighs in the 900lb range.Keeping the cherry picker from tipping is the tricky part.
no problems and no worries ive had just about every motor/trans combo you can think of swinging off one
My 351w went in with a carb plate. First time using one and I was nervous about it, but it worked fine and it really was convenient.
I did a 460 into a E 350 van, no problems. I actually had to bolt the plate to a short steel plate, then bolt the plate to the cherry picker because of the lack of room.
I picked up a 302 and C4 in the junkyard once by hooking the water pump outlet with the hoist. I was harvesting V8 frame mounts and the double hump trans crossmember. I accidentally left one bolt in a frame mount and was picking the whole front of the car up by the water pump and that one bolt. Proves how strong those bolts are in shear. Using a carb plate places bolts in stretch, and I understand your concern. I would be very sure that you have enough threads engaged in the manifold, especially if it is aluminum and you are using carb studs.
alright you crazy people...when it comes down to it, it'll be lifted by carb plate and if it drops...someone owes me a new rad support! haha, lets just pray it doesn't since its my first time doing this and it looks sketchy.
