I have a 74 Maverick 302 V8 and would like opinions on what carb size to go with? I will be using the Edelbrock Preformer manifold. The only other changes I will be making are headers & electronic Ign. Thanks
500 cfm Edelbrock or 600 Holley vacuum secondary, no larger. Stock 302 at 6000 rpm and 100% efficiency only pumps 575 cfm so subtract 20%, from that yet.
stock engine, street car, go with the Edelbrock. Much easier to deal with, set the idle mixture screws, and leave it. THey hold a tune better. If it's something that you dont mind messing with occasionally, a Holley is the way to go. They will make more power, but usually require some attention occasionally. Either way, on a stock engine, I would think a 600 would be plenty, mostly because they're the cheapest available. There's no such thing as too big of a carb if you think about it....at 3000 rpm wide open throttle at 100% efficiency, a 302 only needs 262 cfm. In theory, a 600 would be too big at that engine speed.
thank you for your replys gentleman, I have been out of this trickin stuff for a long time and have forgotten quite a bit! Stage One for this car Is minor mods. Then I will move on to stage II
tip To determine the cfm, take the engine size in cubic inches and multiply it by the maximum rpm or your engine then devide it by 3456 . Vacuum secondary models for cars with street gearing and an auto tranny . Mechanical secondary models for strip gearing and a manual tranny
Jegs has factory remanufactured carbs at a decent price IMO. Check out the link. http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=713&prmenbr=361http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=713&prmenbr=361
If you go with a vac secodary 600 cfm holley the rear of the carb will be too lean @ WFO..I got a 700 DP before I switched to the windsor. if you mash to the floor and secondarys engage...lift lightly on the throttle and the car will pull harder..you can get bigger metering plates
