The catch can I bought has the ability to be used as catch-only or recirculating. I am setting it up as recirculating, where it will blow the water into the bottom of the can, and suck it back in when the coolant cools down.

Does it matter which way for track use?

Recirc is the way I would rather have it set up.

My old one, which was just a chunk of PVC pipe with a cap at both ends, small hole drilled in the top, and the overflow tube stuck in and extending to the bottom. It worked like a recirc, and would suck most of the water back in when it cooled down. They let that slide.

I have no idea what happened to that thing. But now I have a "real" one. It will look better than the pvc pipe version...
