I predict a fast car when I am done with the rebuild and one wheel drive isnt going to cut it. It better be fast for the time and money I am putting in.

Anyway if I go to the junkyard and pull an axle from on old car what will work as a bolt on that has posi? I am thinking this is the best and cheapest. I have a C4 auto/302. 1972 Mav. I am thinking any early 70's mustang should work. Am I wrong?

But they are not gonna be a posi.
It's very doubtful that you will find ANY posi in the salvage yard...even in an early Mustang. Only certain hiperformance cars came with them and they are rarely found in the salvage yards any more. Might as well use what you have and put a spool in it with a good set of gears. Good luck :)

Anyone know which M2s have them? Also, don't some of the Bobcats have them?

Cheapest will be a spool, at about $60 plus labor, unless you do it yourself. Easy job, actually.

Do a search for spool so you can see the safety issues and pros/cons with driving them on the street, and hopefully we will stick to your question here and not get back into those issues on this thread.

easiest ones to spot are the V6 pinto's, M II's & bobcats. not all of them are posi but the ones i have seen are. and most already have 3.40 gears in them

if you have an 8" rear, you can do it cheap. Take the third member out and pull the ring gear off of the carrier. Inside there are 4 spider gears, 2 on the axles and 2 on the pin. The ones on the axles have flat thrust washers between the gears and the carrier--you can get these washers in different thicknesses (and i believe they are the same as a 9", IIRC). Well you can stack those washers--put 2 on each gear, then bolt everything together. What this does is "bind" the spiders in such a way that they will be tight (like a posi) but they will slip a little when you turn a corner.

Now that is a poor man's way of doing it, and it DOES work (I've done it myself) but you have to get the washer thickness just right. Too thick and you won't get the carrier bolted back together without breaking or bending it and too thin and it won't bind the spiders enough. IIRC, when dry assembling the carrier there was about a .015" gap between the halves maybe less than that. But once you bolt the ring gear back on that gap will close up a little and bind the spiders just enough.

Try that at your own risk..you break something and it's your baby.

Next easiest way is to put a mini spool in it, or weld the spiders. But welding isn't a good idea, but lots of people have done it. It weakens the assembly from the heat.

Seen them both done... and done the mini spool.

For just a race vehicle I'd do it... and they are only about 25 bucks.

I have one in a 66 F-100 that i drove everyday.. not the best on the axles... ended up twisting a set, but it also had quite a few hard launches and burnouts also.

The best way is to have your buddy Frank find you a complete 8.8 rear end with 3.73 gear and limited slip, bring it to you, have breakfast with you, and you give him $100. :D

    Frank is my friend.

I think it would be better if he gave YOU the $100. :yup:

    And installed it....
And since he's giving you $100... might as well have him bring a 9'' with aftermarket axles and disk brakes

Just how fast do you predict it to be and what are you going to use it for? The mini spools are not reccommended for drag racing. They do work, and i've used it myself, but not with a high HP car. :)

I've seen some pretty fast cars run mini spools in full out drag cars.
a full spool is lots better, but if he's just going to have a drag car to play with occasionally I wouldn't worry about it.

If he's looking for the cheapest way to do it, he most likely will not want to spend the money on a full spool or a Trac-loc rearend, and the mini spool would work just fine.

We drove a 75 maverick with a mini spool for a while, wasn't the best on it but it worked. I wouldn't hesitate to use it in a weekend car at all

Now, now. I don't want to take advantage of Frank. After all, I didn't have to go to the yard and remove it myself. Did I mention that Frank is my friend?

If your going to make your friend do the work... might as well get the best rearend possible :)

Maybe you could have another friend narrow it up for you :)
