just droped my gas tank to put a new filter on and found a red film coated to the inside of the tank which is coming off. what can i put in there to clean it out or do i need a new tank...
Sounds like the tank had a sealer in it that has failed, if this is the case it will have to be stripped internally and be recoated (bill hirsch makes a great kit) and is the only one ethanol proof
have used...Red Coat... on 4 tanks in the last 5 years......no problems so far...it's what i have in my tank now... as with anything, it must be installed per instructions...
We sublet our aft axle diesel tanks to a radiator shop that recoats them with Redcoat. It seems to hold up pretty well, but I have heard one of our customers say that it can still delaminate. We don't know for sure what causes it but I would suspect it could have something to do with ethanol or the newer diesel additives, or both. I haven't heard of any issues with gas tanks though, so it might just be the diesels with the issue. Yours might not have been prepped properly.
I believe prep has alot to do with it also. And maybe if it isn't completly coated the fuel can work it's way into the edges. I believe it requires some mods. There are tech articles that show how to install newer Mav tanks (not sure what year) that are available. I myself should and may do that once my car is running. I remember it didn't cost much just have to do the mods.
I think I paid $3.85 for the longer carriage bolts holding the straps...and around $10 for a new vapor valve.
