I'm trying to remove a dash pad and I'm down to removing the cluster. I've read the tech article, but I'm not getting something. I'm not sure what tab it's talking about to get the speedometer cable unhooked. I see something that I guess is a lock arm? I've pressed on it and can't get it undone.

Also at what point do you undo to electrical connector? Do you have to release it before the cluster comes out or is there enough slack to pull the cluster out first?

These instructions are for a Ford Ranger but think they apply. I broke the clip on my cable when I unhooked it with the cluster in place.

    **************************************************************************************************

Pull the cluster assembly rearward to gain access to the speedometer cable.

NOTE: If there is insufficient slack in the cable for gaining access, disconnect the cable from the transmission. Once disconnected pull the cluster out gently until enough clearance is gained.

    8) Disconnect the speedometer cable from the cluster. The cable connection has a flat surface clip; press the clip inward and pull the cable from the cluster.

Wow seeing that diagram helped. I guess I was pressing the wrong end. It popped right off, rotated the cluster out towards the drivers door and unplugged the harness. Easy as pie. (y)

Here is a photo of the end of the speedometer cable from a 73 Maverick that adds to the info in post #2. The tab inside the red circle is what seats in circumferential slot on the outside of the speedometer shaft extending from the back of the speedometer. Post #2 shows that slot.

Notice how the plastic assembly is eccentric. To push that tab out of the slot you push on the opposite side of the cable end where the arrow is shown. This all has to be done by feel.
