You aren't doing anything wrong but try using some threaded rod to guide the valve body into the transmission and pull it up with nuts slowly as you make sure that the manual lever and valve, engage as it goes up. At the same time keep moving the "kick-down" linkage lever works freely and moves the valve. It is a lot to do if you have to hold the valve body up while trying to fit it all into place. Once you have it pulled up then installed. Use the nuts on the threaded rods to pull it into position as you move both levers into their proper positions. Then after it is pulled up all the way you should check the movement again before installing and torquing the valve body bolts. After it is all bolted up check it again before installing the pan.

Where does the manual lever have to be in accordance to the column rod so that I can shift the car properly and the transmission shift right to? Is the valve on the valve body all the way back or forward for the manual shift.

Factory adjustments call for the lever to be in the "Drive" detent and pressure on the shifter toward the "2" position without leaving the "Drive" position.

You can determine when the transmission is in park by turning the driveline. Your floor shifter should be detented and marked for the gears. If it is a cable shifter then you place the cable either behind or in front of the shifter depending on the position of the lever on the transmission.
