If it were a Stallion, it's been repainted. If he didn't paint the door jams and door edges, he might be able to prove it was a Stallion with old paint scheme still visable. I can't imagine anyone repainting their car differently, if they were aware of their car being a Stallion. (Notice that it looks like a red interior). Interesting.
Looks like it.... Based on the factory wheels and the black trim I thought it might be Stallion. I could believe that it was painted differently. It would be expensive to repaint that car and keep the factory 2 tone paint job compared to what most folks would consider it worth after the spray job. If it is a Stallion with that red interior, does that make it the black/red version?
I have one of those red/black Stallions and all the reseach I've been able to get shows that all the Stallions came with a black interior, no matter what the exterior colors were. If you were able to look at the drivers side door jamb, there is a sticker with the paint code on it. A Stallion will have two paint codes. I did,nt even know my 76' Maverick was a Stallion until we stripped the paint off the car and found the original colors underneath. The sticker in the door was destroyed by water getting under it and rust discoloring the sticker, but we could still make out the code for the black piant. People did paint them all one color either because of the price to do the two-tone paint job or because they just did'nt like the color combination.
I am finding statements like "Does it have the Stallion steering wheel?" very interesting. I have never seen a Stallion that has a different wheel, than mine. Also, I ordered my Stallion and took 2 hours to do it. The salesman was very patient, and I scoured the options. I do not recall any option for a different steering wheel on the Maverick Stallion. With that being said, I have run across a so called Stallion steering wheel for sale on ebay, as have others on this board. I do believe that steering wheel is either someones creation, or more than likely a steering wheel for a Mustang II Stallion, in which I have only seen a couple in my life. I owned a 76 Cobra II in the late 70's, and the so called Stallion wheel is somewhat like the steering wheel in the Cobra II, but mine did not have a stallion head on the center hub. While I can't say there never was a Maverick Stallion built with a Stallion steering wheel, I can say I have never seen one. I however have looked at EVERY Maverick Stallion and walked around it, cause even when they were new, they were a rare site. They were not a popular car and did not sell well. So when I saw one I checked it out. There are 2 Stallions here in west central IL/ northeast Mo, that I know of, and both have the standard wheel like mine. Dan
I forgot to add, I do think it is a Stallion. Looks as if though the leading trim piece on the hood is incorrect. It should be blackout as well. If it indeed is an original V8 car. it is 1 of 550 V8 Stallions produced. With it being an automatic, it narrows it down to 1 of 495. 1976 figures show that 90% of domestic cars built were automatics. Dan
I have my doubts if it was ever a Stallion. I agree with Dan that the hood trim is wrong. Also, the interior color is wrong as Jean said. The "Stallion" steering wheel is a Mustang wheel. It was never offered for the Maverick. It just uses the same logo. This logo on the fender of the Stallions was used for the Mustang wheel and the forgotten Pinto Stallion. Yes, there was a Pinto version that year also. I'd love to find one and have a matched set. I'd say that with reasonable certainty that this was a base Mav that was mildly tricked out. It is a pretty car, though. FYI, for y'all, according to a search I had the Automotive Information Group in California do last summer, if their facts are correct, there are only 216 Stallions left in existance in the US including mine, Jean's, and Dan's. They insist their databases are very comprehensive. Six of them, including mine and Jean's, reside in Pennsylvania. Where are those other 4, I wonder?
I beleive one of the missing 4 Stallions in PA is currently in the junkyard in Pine Grove ( Klingers). It was a black and grey one that I got a lot of parts off of a few years back. There might have been another one there as well that was painted all blue, but I'm not 100% sure about that one. They both had black interiors.
Mustang Stallion... I have a pic of a Mustang Stallion in a book if anyone wants me to scan and post it. Seth
My mom bought an aqua 1977 Mustang II in 1978. It was new, just a little dusty from sitting on the lot. She still has it, is was a 2.3L auto. It has the 'stallion' steering wheel and stallion logo in the center. I've seen several at swap meets as well, so I assume it was not Stallion only.
Would anyone know if the long lost Pinto Stallions had the Stallion steering wheels on them? For that matter, has anyone ever seem a Pinto Stallion? I know Ford made them but I myself have never seen one. Just wondering.
I remember seeing the Pinto Stallion at the dealers back in 76 but I haven't seen one since, I did see these 2 wagons last year in my favorite Mav/Com yard. One of them had that Stallion steering wheel but I dont remember which one.
