Born a ford lover back in the fifties, I've owned a couple of Comets and Falcons, always thought the Comets were a bit cooler, but generally enjoy all of Henry's products. Had a few Mustangs and currently saving to buy a 72 or 71 Comet. My Mustangs always leaked in the cowl area . I am now making Magnetic cowl covers now listed on Ebay under ford maverick comet cowl cover. If they work as good as the Mustang covers do they should keep most or all the water from getting into the cowl, you just have to remember to open your windows if you drive with it on the car to get fresh air. :thumbs2:

While it will keep some out, it will not keep it all out. I'd bet less than half. All the water that runs down your windshield is dumped in the cowl behind the trim. Plus around the wiper arms is not sealed. Know your treating the symptom rather than curing the problem. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and do what is right.

    :Welcome: to the boards.

I have made some of these as well and have a thread about it somewhere. Dennis is right, it will not keep all the water out on a Maverick, but it does reduce it quite a bit. It also helps to keep out other junk (like leaves).

I've cut all of my cowl vent grills out and made plates to weld in for a more permenant fix but what do I do with the drains for the windshield?

Do I just weld them up too but then where will the water go coming off of the windshield?

I actually bid on one of these last night. I am not concerned about the water as my cowls are in excellent shape and not rusty at all. What I want it for is to keep all of the leaves and debris out of the cowl while its sitting under the carport. Just yesterday morning I was starting to pick leaves out of the cowl grille. I didn't see this post till this morning ....

i did this same mod...but while the grilles were out...
i fiberglass matt/Rust Bullit the cowl floor before installing the plates...
if anyone has a cowl leak before they do this, they will still have a leak if the floor isn't repaired.
water enters around the wiper arms, where the hood seal mounts to the firewall and at the bottom of the windshield...
do you have pics. of your mod?

Well, it's still only half a mod. I cut the grills out but haven't gotton to weld in the new plates yet. I needed more practice with my new welder before I tackled an body parts.

You can see where I plated where the washers used to go so I'm getting better. :dancing:

If the covers had a stronger magnet; One could use some type of soft sealer that was thicker than the magnet. Applied at the diameter around the cover. When the magnet was against the metal it would squash down the sealer to create a tight barrier.

How do you guys think that would work?

I don't think that would work at all.
