Check out this gas cap from Brazil. What do you think, homemade design or a copy of something Ford sold in Brazil? I pumped a few million gallons of gasoline during my early working days (before self-serve gas) - and don't recall a hinged cap like this in the US. What do you think? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Ford-Mustang-GT-Maverick-Falcom-Mercury-Gas-Cap_W0QQitemZ320037893021QQihZ011QQcategoryZ80736QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
yeha if was a betting man , i would say homemade.... i dont like it doesnt look right at all....just my .02
Looks like someone split a deluxe cap and riveted a hinge to the back part. Looks like another hinge was welded to that and somehow attached to the cap so that it folds up and in. I don't think it's factory. edit: I should have clicked the link first. I see now that the guy did make it. Pretty good idea really with the intergrated lock. Quality seems lacking though. Needs to be chrome.
Maybe I should have asked the question different. He did make it, cause in his description he says he makes parts for classic cars. What I was wondering is did he copy a Ford design with the hinged cap or did he homebrew this idea? Maybe some of our Brazillian friends on the board can say whether it has roots in a classic design. I think some other manufacturers (AMC or MOPAR) had a similar hinged cap. It would be cool to see if Ford toyed with the idea in Brazil.
