I have a holley 4160, over a holley dominator intake, with a mild crowell camshaft, dual exaust and i just added a 1" spacer to the carb.

i dont want to cut my hood, but after the spacer i have some clearence issues.

the question is how close the top of the filter lid can it be to the carb?

i am considering a cold air intake, is it really an improvement?

You want it as high above the carb as you can get it. The closer it is, the less the flow into the carb. My 3x2 factory setup had a 1-3/4" filter element. That put the lid right at about 2" above the carb. That was too close for me, but it did work.
